Hi, I'm Valerie and you're listening to The Beauty Brains.

Welcome to The Beauty Brains, a show where real cosmetic chemists answer your beauty product questions and give you an insider's look at the cosmetics industry. This is episode 279 I'm your host, Valerie George, and with me today is Perry Bromanski. Hi Perry, I'm back.

Perry Bromanski (0:27)

Hello, Valerie, so good to see you.

Valerie George (0:30)

Great to see you. We have a good show today. We're gonna cover is octoflora pentyl methacrylate, an amazing technology for hair.

Perry Bromanski (0:38)

That was a nice job on pronouncing that. I'm glad I didn't have to.

Valerie George (0:42)

I'm pretty familiar with this molecule. Yeah, does the steam pod really result in less hair damage? Is there something special about the conditioner that comes with hair dye? It always feels so good.

Are US ingredients appropriate for use in other countries on skin? And does the Neutrogena vitamin C capsules work better than vitamin C delivered from a cream or lotion? But first, chit chat.

Perry Bromanski (1:07)

Oh, sure. Yeah, it's been a little while. You were on a trip last time, so I'm so glad you were able to join us today.

Valerie George (1:15)

Yeah, I took a couple weeks off, but I'm back.

Perry Bromanski (1:19)

And we're glad. Now, Valerie, there's just one thing I want to ask you about. All right.

I don't, you probably haven't seen this, but take a look at my elbow.

Valerie George (1:31)

Why do you have a puffy elbow? What happened?

Perry Bromanski (1:37)

I was in Florida, and remember I went to the sunscreen symposium, which was a great event.

But while I was there, I, well, I had these sticky shoes. I was trying to take my shoes off.

Valerie George (1:50)

Why were your shoes sticky?

Perry Bromanski (1:52)

I had these dress shoes. You ever have a pair of dress shoes that you just can't pull off of your feet?

Valerie George (1:58)

Yeah.

Perry Bromanski (1:59)

Yeah. They just kept sticking on my feet. And I'm yanking and untied them as far. I take the shoelaces out and I'm trying to yank this shoe off. Now I was balancing on one foot and sort of doing like the tree pose, but then I'm trying to yank my shoe off.

And then I just sort of timbered over like a tree falling, but I landed solidly on my elbow on this concrete floor.

Valerie George (2:27)

Well, sticky shoe removal 101 Sit down for that.

Perry Bromanski (2:32)

That's a lesson learned. So now I have this puffy elbow and it's just like one of those stress balls which you can squeeze, but it doesn't seem to be going away. I should probably go to the doctor for that or something, right?

Valerie George (2:45)

Yeah, you might have something broken. Are you going to be okay juggling?

Perry Bromanski (2:52)

I'm going to be okay for my race on Sunday, but yeah, you know, I don't think anything's broken. It's just, well, I was in Florida, so I figured there's two possibilities. One, it's either bursitis, or two, it's I got bit by a bot fly, and so I've got some larva growing in there. I know.

So we'll see in a couple of days.

Valerie George (3:13)

No, I think something's fractured. That's what I think.

Perry Bromanski (3:16)

Well, it doesn't hurt. So I am actually going to go to the doctor next week. So we'll see what it is.

Valerie George (3:23)

Oh, good. Oh, man.

Perry Bromanski (3:27)

Indeed. Yes, I have the, I'm doing the marathon on Sunday, so I will report back on how that went.

That'll be fun.

Valerie George (3:34)

Good luck. You know, I mean, you run every day, and you got this streak going. I'm not sure what day you're at, but I feel like you could do it.

Perry Bromanski (3:41)

4,709 today, I did it.

Valerie George (3:44)

Yeah, I think you'll be fine.

Perry Bromanski (3:46)

I mean, it's only 26 miles, so we'll see.

Valerie George (3:49)

Oh my gosh. Well, good luck with your race. But for now, let's talk about some beauty science news.

We have a lot of stuff happening in the last couple of weeks. What'd you see?

Perry Bromanski (4:04)

We did. Well, you know, I said I was at that sunscreen symposium, and during that, there was a report published by the FDA which said, hey, we're okay with sunscreens now.

Valerie George (4:16)

Well, what does that mean?

Perry Bromanski (4:18)

Well, if you remember from last year, there was a report out from the FDA that looked at the actives that were currently being sold as sunscreen actives.
