Bababam Why do men fall in love more quickly than women?
Thanks for asking.
There are plenty of common misconceptions out there about love that opposites attract, or that you should feel butterflies in your stomach immediately, for example. Another one is that women always fall in love first, and films often reinforce that last stereotype, portraying women as hopeless romantics, while men, on the other hand, tend to do their best to avoid commitment. Are you saying it's actually a myth that women fall in love first then? Indeed, several studies say that actually the opposite is more common. In 2025, a team from the Australian National University, led by human mating researcher Adam Bode, studied 808 young adults aged 18 to 25 The participants were all in the first two years of a relationship at the time, and came from 33 countries across Europe, North America and South Africa. And on average, the men involved reported falling in love around one month sooner than the women.
About 30% of the men said they'd even fallen in love before the relationship officially started. There was an interesting twist to the findings that we should bear in mind. Although men reported falling in love sooner and more often, women generally described their feelings as more intense. They also reported more obsessive thinking about their partners, and initially appeared more committed. Although that difference in commitment disappeared once researchers accounted for other factors.
What did the researchers say was behind those differences? There was no single confirmed explanation. But one possibility is linked to social expectations. You see, in heterosexual dating, men are still often expected to approach somebody, initiate dates, and move the relationship forward. Recognising or expressing love early may therefore help signal that they're serious about a potential partner. Another explanation comes from evolutionary psychology. Researchers have proposed that women may historically have faced greater physical and practical consequences from choosing an unsuitable partner, particularly because of pregnancy and childcare. They may have therefore adjusted to show greater caution. A 2011 study led by psychologist Marissa Harrison similarly found that men reported falling in love sooner than women, and that they were three times more likely to say, I love you first. The authors also suggested that women might take longer to assess whether a partner's commitment is genuine. Of course, these are generalizations rather than rules. Social expectations, previous relationships, personality and attachment style may all influence how quickly somebody falls in love. Even saying, I love you first doesn't necessarily prove that the feeling developed first for that person, rather than their partner. Some people are simply more comfortable putting their emotions into words. How long does it actually take to fall in love then? There's no scientifically established timeline. The popular idea that love becomes real after exactly 90 days isn't supported by a universal rule. The Australian National University study we were talking about earlier found that the average timing was roughly one month after a relationship began for men, and two months for women. But those are just averages, and there's a lot of variation, of course. Some people fell in love before the relationship started while others took much longer. The study also had its limitations. It only included young adults who were already experiencing romantic love, and roughly 85% were heterosexual. Also most participants came from western countries, so the findings are far from representative of every age group, culture or sexuality out there.
