800-222-5222 is telephone number 1-800-222-5222. Randy, are you bilingual by chance?

Randy Wegg (1:08)

I'm trying to be. I do Duolingo for Spanish every day, so I can say fin de semana, which means weekend.

John Phillips (1:15)

Okay, I'm gonna teach a little Spanish right now. You ready for this?

Randy Wegg (1:19)

Uh-huh.

John Phillips (1:20)

You know what becerra means in English?

Randy Wegg (1:23)

What's that?

John Phillips (1:23)

Witness protection program.

Randy Wegg (1:26)

Oh, wow. I'm gonna have to write that down. Might need to use that in Spain.

John Phillips (1:32)

Because he's a candidate for governor, but you wouldn't know it because he's not doing any of the things that normal candidates do, like travel around the state, holding rallies, sitting down for interviews, participating in multiple debates and candidate forums. He is nowhere to be seen.

Randy Wegg (1:51)

He has a scheduling conflict for the entire month of October.

John Phillips (1:56)

Do you think he goes to the dentist or do you think there's a scheduling conflict there too?

Johnny Gass, to talk about this and much, much more is the CEO of State of Gold, Inc and the host of the State of Gold podcast. You can follow him on exit, real John Slavitt. John Slavitt, welcome.

John Slavitt (2:15)

Thank you, gentlemen. It's a pleasure.

John Phillips (2:18)

Thank you for being here.

So Javier Becerra, as I mentioned before, not doing the things that we typically see candidates do. He's phoned it in and is relying on Democratic registration to push him over the goal line. And he fully intends to be the next governor of California without having to work for it. Your thoughts?

John Slavitt (2:42)

Where do I start, John?

I think that former President Biden had an upscale retrofit of his basement. I think it includes provisions, snacks. I think it's got a 70-inch TV. I think all the medical equipment for Mr. Becerra is down there. I think he's living down there. And it's really, it's a metaphor. It's funny, but it's just a metaphor for calling it in. I think it's an affront to voters and to citizens who deserve to see him out there making the case, who deserve to see him debating Steve Hilton. And it's arrogant, it's wrong, and it's a shame, because California needs a debate, a real debate.

John Phillips (3:36)

It seems like it's also setting him up for failure should he be elected to be governor. You see this happen in sports frequently. When you have a team that's very good, that qualifies for the playoffs, they get the slot that they want in the playoffs, and they take their foot off the gas pedal, and they play the reserves, and the stars sit on the bench, and they get fat and happy, and then they go into the playoffs, and they get smoked by some underdog.

And it just seems like, yeah, it may be good enough for him to win the election, but when he becomes governor, and he's not used to sitting down for interviews, he's not used to having the full day, full schedule each and every day, there's gonna be some rust, and it's gonna hit hard.

John Slavitt (4:28)

Yeah, well, I think you're right. I mean, look at Steve Hilton. Steve is working his butt off. He's out there every day.

He's with people. He's doing his town halls. He's all over social media. And he's putting out specific policy proposals, John, things that California voters and citizens desperately need, like $70 to register your car, like bringing down the cost of fuel, especially for those truckers and people with diesel, but it's hurting everyone, like no income tax under $150,000.
