Thanks for asking. Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos, modern billionaires are in a league of their own. We're often told that wealth comes from hustle, long hours and smart decisions. But once you reach billionaire level, we're no longer talking about salaries, bonuses or promotions. Take Jeff Bezos, for example. As of April 2025, Forbes estimated his fortune at around $236 billion. For comparison, the median salary in the US is about $60,000 a year. So how long would the average American have to work to earn Bezos-level wealth? The answer? More than 3 million years. And that's assuming they never spend a single cent. And yet there's one man even wealthier than Bezos, Musk or any other billionaire alive today. Who was he?
Mansa Musa, known in his time as the King of Kings, ruled the Mali Empire from 1312 to 1332
His fortune is estimated between 400 and 600 billion dollars in today's money, though historians say it's nearly impossible to measure.
At its height, his empire stretched across much of West Africa, including parts of modern-day Mali, Senegal, Guinea, Bekina Faso, Ivory Coast and beyond. So how did he become so rich? The simple answer is gold and lots of it. The Mali Empire was home to what was, at the time, the largest known gold reserve on earth. And under the empire's laws, all of it belonged to the emperor. He was so rich that one trip caused a full-blown economic meltdown. In 1324, Mansa Musa made a pilgrimage to Mecca that's still talked about today. He didn't travel light. He brought over 10 tons of gold along with a caravan of 60,000 men, 12,000 slaves and 100 camels to carry the treasure.
During a stop in Cairo, he spent lavishly, handing out so much gold that the local currency collapsed. The sudden gold surplus led to massive inflation and the economic shock reportedly lasted a full decade. Where did all that power come from? Mansa Musa inherited his throne. And that part might sound familiar. In the US and the UK today, a significant chunk of billionaire wealth is still inherited. According to Oxfam, over a third of billionaire fortunes come from family money. So whether it's 14th century royalty or modern capitalism, the story often starts the same way, with inheritance, not income. There you have it.
