First and foremost, it's important to know that fridges with ventilated or circulated cold air have a more consistent temperature than those with static cold air. In the latter case, the temperature varies based on the distance from the cold source. So you should start by identifying the coldest area of your fridge. You can refer to the manufacturer's instructions to find out if it's located towards the top or bottom of the appliance, or you can place a thermometer in your fridge and test different compartments. What should be stored in the coldest part then? The zone should be kept between and 4 degrees celsius. And you'll want to place highly perishable foods there such as raw meat and fish, creams, cheeses, cooked dishes and open products. You can also use this area to thaw frozen items. Next is the fresh zone, located in the central part with the temperature from 4 to 6 degrees celsius. In this compartment, you can store cooked vegetables, yogurt and cooked meats or fish. Finally, the vegetable drawer. As the name suggests, you can store fresh fruit and veg inside, but remember to wash them prior to storing, to prevent soil and potential bacteria from dirtying the drawers. Finally, in the fridge door, the part with the mildest temperature, you can place butter, milk, open bottles of fruit juice, eggs, sauces and condiments. Should packaging be removed? Yes. Let's take the example of yogurt containers. They should be removed as they might be dirty and contaminate other items. It also allows air to circulate better around the products in the fridge. The same applies when products are overcrowded. They don't leave enough space for cold air circulation. As a result, the temperature can rise and bacteria multiply. Also, remember not to mix raw foods with cooked foods, especially meat or fish. That's to avoid cross-contamination, meaning bacteria from raw products spreading to cooked ones. Finally, placing items that expire quickly at the front will make you less likely to forget about them, thus reducing food waste. How should I be cleaning my fridge? Ideally, you should do it every two weeks, or at least once a month. Avoid using chemical products and instead opt for Marseille soap, black soap, or a mixture of white vinegar and lukewarm water in equal parts. One last important point to remember, defrost your appliance at least once a year. That prevents the alteration of frozen food preservation, and consequently the growth of bacteria.
There you have it.
