What's in Republicans' latest budget bill?
From Marketplace in New York, I'm Kimberly Adams. The House Budget Committee approved a $95 billion piece of legislation yesterday that will pave the way for a budget process known as reconciliation. It allows the majority party to pass bills without support from the minority. This would be the third time Republicans have used the process to move big legislation to Congress. It heads to the House floor next and would fund things like defense and farm assistance. Marketplace's Nancy Marshall Genzer takes a look at what's in the measure.
**Nancy Marshall Genzer** (2:04)
The budget bill sets aside $73 billion for military and intelligence spending. It's a framework and doesn't say specifically how the money should be spent. That comes later. But Henrietta Traze of the advisory firm VEDA Partners expects the Pentagon to spend the money on the war in the Middle East.
**SPEAKER_5** (2:21)
Most of it is on munitions and operational costs for having our military deployed in the Gulf region.
**Nancy Marshall Genzer** (2:28)
Operational costs like military salaries. There's also $12 billion in aid for farmers.
**SPEAKER_5** (2:33)
They are getting a double whammy of the tariffs and then also the war with Iran.
**Nancy Marshall Genzer** (2:40)
Losing market share to other countries because of the tariffs and paying higher prices for things like fertilizer because of the war.
There's also money in the bill for a fund supporting the voting restrictions President Trump has been pressing for. Romina Bachia at the Cato Institute says the money will probably go to states that do things like verifying ID and citizenship before registering people to vote. That's a far cry from actually passing the voting restrictions President Trump wants. Laura Blessing of Georgetown University says this budget bill is full of compromises on what it does and how much spending it allows on defense, for example. So they're looking for kind of a Goldilocks solution of having some military spending, but not a ton of it. But it's not clear when or whether this bill will become law. If it clears the House, it still has to be approved by the Senate. I'm Nancy Marshall Gensler for Marketplace.
