The unemployed workers loved out of the unemployment rate.
From Marketplace in Washington, I'm Kimberly Adams. We just got the jobs report for August earlier this morning. It showed the US economy added 162,000 jobs last month, way more than analysts expected. The unemployment rate stayed the same month over month, it's still 4.1 percent. But there are tens of thousands of people, maybe hundreds of thousands, who stopped working last month and they did not show up in the data. Syrians and Haitians who lost their work authorization due to the expiration of their temporary protected status at the end of July.

And we do know mass layoffs did occur, but they don't even count in our layoff statistics because they're not qualified for unemployment insurance.

Diane Swank is chief economist at KPMG.

On the flip side of it, they don't count among the unemployed either because they're not legally able to work anymore. Now, some may work under the table, we don't know, but those wouldn't show up in official payrolls either.

And Swank says the workers who lost their jobs are concentrated in certain industries.

The largest ones were in the service sector economy, in areas where we're already seeing some rationing of care and shortages of workers in the elder care space and in child care.

The loss is already being felt in Florida, which had a high concentration of TPS workers. Margaret Nurette is vice president of long-term care at 1199 Service Employees International Union in Florida, and says about 35,000 of her members relied on TPS for work authorization.

They are doing patient care, working in the nursing home, taking care of patients, feed them, put them in the chair, put them back in bed.

Now Nurette says those workers are trying to figure out what to do. The Trump administration has called for them to self-deport. But nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and other businesses they worked for are scrambling as well.

Management are crying. They have to let go all those workers, and now they don't have workers to work.
Now they have to pay a lot of overtime.

Which, says Nurett, is burning out the employees who can still legally work in the country. [♪ music playing, fades out.

Last weekend kicked off the college football season and fans around the country are tuning in and shelling out for tickets. College sports are extremely profitable, but until a few years ago, the athletes couldn't profit themselves while still in school.
In 2021, the NCAA changed its rules around name, image and likeness, NIL for short. And for the first time, college athletes were allowed to profit from their sports. Marketplace's Alice Wilder reports on how NIL is changing the game for college athletes.

Like many fans, Charlotte Wilder, no relation, always thought that college athletes should really get paid.

Ohio State football is nothing if you don't have any Ohio State football players. So yes, they should be getting money.

Wilder is the co-host of the Sports Gossip Show, a podcast about off-the-field sports news. She told me that NIL changed everything for college athletes.

You can get brand deals the way that any content creator could. You can have a deal with a local business. You can have these national deals that are sort of structured more like traditional commercial endorsement deals. You can also be paid through the college collectives.

That's a system where boosters pool their money to recruit athletes. And it's not just the direct payments that are benefiting students.
