Summer burnout. What to do when you're exhausted after your holidays? Thanks for asking. It may come as a surprise, but for some, summer isn't always a time for rest and recharging. Quite the opposite, in fact. The phenomena known as mid-year crisis or summer burnout is a type of seasonal depression that occurs during the summer months.
What are the symptoms? According to The Guardian newspaper, symptoms include drowsiness, lack of appetite, decreased libido and energy, and a general feeling of being overworked and tired. These feelings can occur during or after holidays, even after a period of rest. It's as if the positive effects expected from a holiday were totally ephemeral. Worse, some people feel more sensitive and irritable than before their break. How can you explain this seasonal crisis?
There are various possibilities. The most affected often include people with financial or employment issues who may find these problems more pronounced during the holidays. Women are also at risk as their mental load can increase due to unshared or poorly shared domestic responsibilities, which can be even more demanding during the holidays. In other cases, despite looking forward to vacations all year, fatigue and lack of motivation persist. Psychiatrist Natasha Bejjani, interviewed by The Guardian, suggests that it's not necessarily linked to the summer period, but rather to a society that consistently pushes us to do more, both physically and professionally. But isn't summer supposed to be special?
Indeed, summer often serves as a mid-year review. This can lead to feelings of disappointment, discouragement and fatigue if you feel far from achieving your goals. The pressure to love summer can also be overwhelming, another obligation, and add to that the hot sun is not everyone's cup of tea either. So what can we do to stop feeling exhausted after a holiday? The first step is to recognise the issue before reaching a breaking point. It's also important not to place all of your hopes on your holidays to rebalance your personal and professional life. Instead, try to take time for yourself throughout the year without any performance expectations. This helps rest the brain without waiting for the holidays. Neuroscientist Albert Mukabea agrees, advising that by finding balance in your work life, through reducing daily pressures, focusing on actionable tasks, and learning to delegate are all small steps that you can take to actually help you enjoy your holidays. There you have it. Now you know what to do when you're exhausted after your holiday. In under three minutes, we answer your questions and help you understand the true meaning behind the trends, concepts and acronyms that are making headlines. Listen along and you really will know for sure.
