Hi, I'm Perry, and you're listening to The Beauty Brains.
Hello, and welcome to The Beauty Brains, a show where real cosmetic chemists answer your beauty product questions and give you an insider's look at the cosmetic industry. This is episode 287, the first one of the year. I'm your host, Perry Romanowski, and with me today, as always, or as usually, Valerie George. Hello, Valerie.
Valerie George (0:32)
Hello, Perry, happy new year.
Perry Romanowski (0:34)
Yes, it is a whole new year. Well, Valerie, we're back with a new show, and on today's show, we've got a few questions we're going to answer from our patrons. Are acrylates copolymer water soluble?
Where's the prospects for finding a job for a cosmetic chemist in the United States? We're going to answer questions about May Lindstrom's blue cocoon oil, and we're also going to talk about menthol. Is it really doing anything, or is it just, you know, something that we like to do? But before that, Valerie, it's a new year. And, you know, January is always one of my favorite times of the year, because I get to reset all of my goals. Now, I did okay, I do this whole spreadsheet every year that I've been doing since, boy, 2003 So, boy, I have a lot of, I know I have a lot of data.
Well, I make a new one every year, but I do have an archive one that has all of them. But yeah, I just make a, so I make the date on one side, and then I just have all my goals at the top, and then I put a like little tracking thing about, you know, running and juggling and pushups and like.
Valerie George (1:48)
Is that how you know how many days in a row you've done something?
Perry Romanowski (1:52)
I do, that is another way I do that too. And I write down everybody I've seen and talked to.
Well, all the important people. So I could go back and look, how many times did I see or talk to Valerie last year?
Valerie George (2:04)
Oh, wow, I didn't know you did that. That's kind of creepy.
Perry Romanowski (2:09)
Yeah, I suppose somebody could look at it like that.
Valerie George (2:11)
Well, it's kind of like your diary, right?
Perry Romanowski (2:13)
Exactly. It's like Descartes said famously, is the unexamined life really worth living?
Or was that Socrates? I don't know, one of those guys.
Valerie George (2:22)
Maybe neither, I don't know.
Well, I also like this time of year because new year, new me, fresh starts. And I also make resolutions. One that I've been trying to do in the last couple years is book club. Book club, we talked about it on the last show. I didn't get to hit all my goals for reading books last year because I started a business. But I'm on track. We're halfway through the first week almost of 2022
And I've read part of a book. So on track so far.
Perry Romanowski (2:55)
That is excellent. Well, I actually have a book goal too.
And I've already read three books. So now I have to say, the one book I read mostly last December, but I finished it like on January 1st.
Valerie George (3:13)
It does not count.
Perry Romanowski (3:15)
Oh, it does. Well, according to the Valerie card, that's okay. When would I count it though for last year?
Valerie George (3:20)
You would not get to count it. That's your penalty for being caught in between.
Perry Romanowski (3:24)
At all. Well, you know, a book I did read, which is, it's driven me a little bit insane.
The Maria Kondo, the magic tidying up art, the magic art of tidying up.
Valerie George (3:37)
Yeah, how is that?
Perry Romanowski (3:38)
I say it's pretty good. You get to sort of cut away the sort of woo woo fluffers, but the whole, the system, where you sort all your stuff and just get rid of everything, it's pretty good.
But unfortunately, it's like, one of the things to do is she says, take a whole, take all your clothes and put them in a pile and then pick them up and say, does this bring me joy? And if it does, you keep it. If it doesn't, you throw it out.
Valerie George (4:03)
Have you tried it?
Perry Romanowski (4:05)
I have. And so it caused me to get rid of a lot of pairs of socks that had holes in them.
Valerie George (4:13)
See, I'm like, I could sew these and fix them. I would have been a good popper back in the day.
