Hi, I'm Valerie and you're listening to The Beauty Brains.
Welcome to The Beauty Brains, a show where real cosmetic chemists answer your beauty product questions and give you an insider's look at the cosmetic industry. This is episode 277 I'm your host, Valerie George, and with me today is my good cosmetic chemist friend, Perry Romanowski. Hi Perry.
Perry Romanowski (0:30)
Hello Valerie, so good to see you as always.
Valerie George (0:33)
Great to see you. I'm glad to finally have some repetition in our routine and get to some really good questions for this show, including-
Perry Romanowski (0:41)
We got a number of them, yeah.
Valerie George (0:42)
Oh yeah. What ingredients are suitable for sensitive skin? What makes Peter Thomas Roth Firm-X Eye Tightener work? Peptides in cosmetics. Hmm, do ingredients accumulate in your body?
Are there ingredients in makeup one should avoid? And can estheticians get more powerful ingredients than us lowly consumers?
Perry Romanowski (1:03)
Well, we're not lowly consumers, we're chemists. We can get anything.
Valerie George (1:08)
Well, or we could make it, right? We don't have to buy it.
Perry Romanowski (1:11)
That's right.
Valerie George (1:12)
If you can't buy it, make it.
Perry Romanowski (1:14)
That's right. Yeah, yeah.
Valerie George (1:16)
But first, sunscreen symposium. What is it, Perry, and are you going?
Perry Romanowski (1:22)
I am going to the sunscreen symposium this week in Florida, in Orlando. I have to admit to a certain level of trepidation about going to a conference in Florida during a pandemic, I must say.
Valerie George (1:38)
Well, you know, you're gonna be fine, Perry. You know, I just went to Cosmoprof, Las Vegas.
Yes, Las Vegas. And I also had some, you know, uncertainty, because even, you know, pre-pandemic, Vegas is a little...
Perry Romanowski (1:55)
The Vegas is a little, you know, germy anyway. Yeah.
Valerie George (1:59)
And you know what? It was totally fine. I think you're gonna be good.
You know, it might be awkward, like for a minute, like what's happening? Am I allowed to shake hands? And then I think it'd be pretty good.
Perry Romanowski (2:09)
Yeah, I don't worry about it too much. Of course, I, you know, got all vaxxed up and they're requiring masks and there's like double the space. But yeah, it should be interesting. I haven't gotten on a plane even since this whole pandemic started. So I've got that going.
Valerie George (2:27)
Wow, do you have to wear bikinis to the show as like for swimwear optional? Wouldn't that be funny? If they had like a swimwear pageant?
Perry Romanowski (2:36)
Do you think a Speedo would be too much?
Valerie George (2:40)
Only if it is a thong, otherwise no.
Perry Romanowski (2:44)
Indeed, indeed.
Valerie George (2:46)
Oh my gosh. Can you recommend that for the next sunscreen symposium? Like Miss America, they have like the swimsuit section of the pageant or at least they used to. If there was a sunscreen section of the pageant and like one had to walk down a runway applying sunscreen.
Perry Romanowski (3:05)
Yeah, and you know, there could also be like a spray tan thing, which might be like, they should have a spray tan booth, right?
Valerie George (3:13)
Oh, wouldn't that be fun? Complementary spray tans. It's like face painting at a carnival. But you know what's one thing? There's always, it's not at the sunscreen symposium, but this kind of reminded me of it. There's an awards event hosted by one of our favorite online publications for chemists in the industry, Happy Magazine. And it's like an anti-aging conference slash award. They award a brand for an anti-aging product.
And I always kind of write them.
I don't think it's funny anymore to them probably, but I've tweeted about it a few times. But I always want to submit the hair color creations I have because hair color is one of the oldest anti-aging products that have been used in the world because people want to cover their grays, which is something that instantly reverses the perception of age.
Perry Romanowski (4:03)
Yeah, no, it's an anti-aging technology. That actually works, like immediately.
Valerie George (4:10)
Yeah, anyway, oh well. Should we head over to some beauty science news?
What do we have going on this week?
Perry Romanowski (4:22)
Well, Valerie, I was actually contacted by a reporter somewhere, a documentary maker or something.
They asked me about a topic that we've touched on a few times here on the show. But this is the first time I heard about the brand Function of Beauty. You know Function of Beauty?
Valerie George (4:44)
I do. What's their beef with my friends over at Function of Beauty?
