Hi, I'm Perry, and you're listening to The Beauty Brains.

Hello, and welcome to The Beauty Brains, a show where real cosmetic chemists answer your beauty product questions and give you an insider's look at the cosmetic industry. This is episode 231 I'm your host, Perry Romanowski, and with me today is Valerie George. She's burning up there in California. Hey, Valerie.

Valerie George (0:32)

Hey, Perry.

Perry Romanowski (0:34)

What, do they have a heat wave out there or something?

Valerie George (0:36)

Oh, it is so hot here, so hot. So if I lose power, I'm very sorry. That's the grid shutting down.

Perry Romanowski (0:44)

Oh, well, hopefully you don't lose power before we get to answer the questions we're covering on today's show, which will be, what is the PAO, and why can't I find it on makeup? Will natural collagen drinks or tablets improve the appearance of acne scars? Are antifrizz serums detrimental to hair, and what ingredients should you avoid to prevent milia? Interesting questions all around. And of course, we're gonna have some of our famous chit chat and a little bit of beauty science news, and also a special rant by Valerie. I can't wait to hear that one.

But first a little chit chat. Hey Valerie, I do have some news.

I got a new cat.

Valerie George (1:26)

Meow, how's that going?

Perry Romanowski (1:29)

Well, you know, the last cat I got was named Solar, and we're just doing fostering cats because my wife's allergic, but we had that cat for just a week. It was so friendly. He loved my wife. He would like hung around her all the time. He barely liked me, even though I was the only one cleaning up and feeding me.

Valerie George (1:45)

You're the one who rescued him.

Perry Romanowski (1:48)

Exactly, exactly.

But he was sad to see him go, but we got a new cat, and this cat is named Macy, and she just happens to like me more. Oh, good.

Valerie George (1:58)

How long do you have Macy?

Perry Romanowski (2:01)

Well, so far we've had her a week, and she's finally getting used to us. Although, you know, while the other cat, he was very friendly. This cat, you know, you can pet her for a little while, and then she gets a little too stimulated, and will try to swipe at you. So I'm still working on that.

She has a lot of sass, I have to say.

Valerie George (2:20)

Oh, good. That's so much fun. Isn't it so fun to have a pet?

Perry Romanowski (2:25)

It is. I do like pets.

And, you know, I like the fostering thing too, because, you know, there's a... Well, it is sort of bittersweet to let them go, but having a pet, you have to sort of think about them a lot, and I come from a life where it was just me and my wife, and, you know, we didn't really think about anything else.

Valerie George (2:48)

Oh, well, it's a good change.

Perry Romanowski (2:49)

Indeed, indeed. All right, shall we move on to some beauty science news?

Valerie George (2:54)

Yeah.

Perry Romanowski (3:00)

Here's a story that I saw coming out of the UK, and I only want to talk about it, because it seems relevant to everybody's lives now, but especially my own.

Valerie George (3:11)

Basically, yeah, that's what I was gonna say.

Perry Romanowski (3:14)

Exactly. The title was that personal grooming slips in the UK. And this story was published in Happy, but it's a review of a study that came out of the UK that says nearly one in 10 adults haven't brushed their teeth every day since the pandemic started.

Now, I have to say, that's probably just the people that admit it, right? I'm sure there's more.

Valerie George (3:39)

Yeah, not many people would admit they don't.

Perry Romanowski (3:41)

Right, I mean, how many times you wake up, and then it's three o'clock in the afternoon, you're like, oh, you know what? I forgot to brush my teeth.

Valerie George (3:50)

You're waking up at three in the afternoon, or three in the afternoons when you realize you didn't brush your teeth?

Perry Romanowski (3:56)

That second one, right. No, I wake up about six every morning, even on the weekends. So here are just some things that they say that people have admitted to letting slip.

16% of people say they're not showering every day. And I have to admit, I know this is me. Before the pandemic, I pretty much showered every day. But now that I'm not going out anywhere, I'm not really seeing people.
