What is Extinction Rebellion?
Thanks for asking. This environmental movement was created in England just a few years ago in October 2018, but quickly spread all across the world. Extinction Rebellion's aim is to compel governments to take action against global warming and environmental collapse. It's earned a reputation as a radical organization due to its disobedience and disruption tactics. But only using non-violent action is one of its key principles. Also known as XR, Extinction Rebellion was born from a realization that traditional protest methods were insufficient when it came to the environment crisis. These activists felt new methods and organization forms were required, taking inspiration from other grassroots movements like Occupy, the American Civil Rights Movement or the Suffragettes. Its symbol is a circled hourglass, communicating that time is running out when it comes to saving planet Earth and its species.
Since autumn 2018, Extinction Rebellion activists have been occupying city squares, damaging property and blockading bridges. What do they actually want in concrete terms? Their demands include governments declaring a climate emergency, the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, an end to ecosystem destruction, and the creation of a citizen assembly in charge of climate justice.
A year after being founded, Extinction Rebellion was already present in nearly 50 countries, a figure which has since risen to 81 In October 2019, the movement organised a two-week international rebellion, gate-crashing political debates and disrupting public transport. Many observers find their actions to be a nuisance, but some actually see XR as too timid, or not attentive enough to other social movements. How did such a young movement get to be so rich and powerful? Extinction Rebellion certainly thinks on a grand scale. The international movement has already collected millions of dollars in funding, most of which came from donations, including from British billionaire Sir Christopher Hone and music band Radiohead.
But one of the biggest donors is a climate emergency fund run by billionaire investors, which has led to the movement receiving significant criticism. The most recent UK rebellion event took place in April 2022, with another scheduled for September. Through its website, XR is already encouraging followers to save the date. There you have it.
