Muteen, adjective. Used to describe an individual whose spirit is unyielding, unconstrained, one who navigates life on their own terms, effortlessly. They do not always show up on time, but when they arrive, you notice, an individual confident in their contradictions.
They know the rules, but behave as if they do not exist. Muteen, the new fragrance by Miu Miu, defined by you. Ba ba ba.

What is confirmation bias, and how does it affect our judgment?
Thanks for asking.
Have you ever found yourself in a debate with someone and realised as it goes on, that the person you're talking to simply isn't going to change their mind? That might be the case even if they're expressing a controversial point of view, or saying something that goes against scientific evidence. Why is that then? Well, it's often because they're so convinced their perspective is right, that they can't see any nuances in the discussion. Even when you present a solid argument that challenges their views, they only focus on what supports their position and twist it into their defence. The chances are they're experiencing something known as confirmation bias. What's that then? Confirmation bias is a mental shortcut that shapes how we evaluate information. It might help us make decisions quickly, but on the flip side, it can also lead us astray. It was first identified by American psychologist Peter C. Wason. In 1960, he conducted an experiment based on number sequences and published his findings in the quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology.
Confirmation bias is essentially the tendency to favour information that aligns with our pre-existing beliefs or hypotheses, while ignoring or dismissing anything that contradicts them. This bias often comes into play with emotionally charged issues, strong opinions, and deeply held beliefs. People affected by confirmation bias don't just seek out information that supports their views, they also struggle to interpret evidence objectively. This phenomenon isn't limited to everyday conversations, it can even appear in scientific research. For example, even a specialist in their given field might misinterpret experimental results in order to try to prove their own hypothesis.
How can you avoid falling into that trap? It's important to develop critical thinking skills and be open to questioning your own beliefs. Remember, this bias often ties closely to emotions and personal convictions. Instead of assuming you're right, try adopting a mindset of curiosity. You might be right, but you might also be wrong. Seek out diverse sources of information and actively engage with viewpoints that challenge your own. It's also important to recognize that you don't need to have an opinion on everything. It's okay to be undecided and take time to reflect. Simply being aware of confirmation bias is a significant first step in mitigating its effects. Practice self-reflection and consider whether your past experiences or assumptions might be influencing your judgment. By doing so, you'll become better equipped to approach debates and decisions with clarity and fairness.
There you have it. Now you know what confirmation bias is. In under three minutes, we answer your questions and help you understand the true meaning behind the trends, concepts and acronyms that are making headlines. Listen along and you will really know for sure.
