There's a corner of the internet defending Dee Dee Blanchard as an innocent mother. They point to Gypsy Rose's prison calls, her dishonesty, and a confirmed genetic condition as proof Dee Dee was telling the truth. The condition is real. What Dee Dee did with it isn't. 1q21.

There's a growing corner of the internet that has built a case for Dee Dee Blanchard. Not the prosecution's case, a defense for Dee Dee Blanchard. This is the mother who had Munchausen by proxy that was murdered by Gypsy Rose and her boyfriend.

Podcasts, social media accounts, content creators, some have decided, despite all of the evidence, that doesn't even involve Gypsy, just other people's interactions with Dee Dee, that she was somehow a good mother, a loving mother, a woman who had a genuinely sick daughter and got murdered for it. They cite Gypsy Rose's prison phone calls or documented dishonesty and FOIA records they've read through their own lens. Their conclusion, Dee Dee was innocent and Gypsy was the real monster all along. It's a very this or that sort of proposition. Now, let me begin by saying, I am not here to stand up for Gypsy Rose Blanchard by any stretch of the imagination. I think she's fairly monstrous as well. And I do think her mother was too. The two can coexist. This conflating of, well, if Gypsy's bad, she must have been good.

Doesn't hold water. And it's a very bizarre equivalency considering there's mountains of evidence to the contrary. And I don't get where people are wanting to die on this hill because it seems like a weird semantic of this whole story that doesn't make a lot of sense to be getting hung up on.

Let's just go through it. And yes, I'm sure we get read the request. Look at the phone calls. Yes, I have. Okay, I have. And yeah, Gypsies batshit crazy too, in my opinion, without a doubt. Manipulative as fuck, cares about herself. It's all she knows.

SPEAKER_1 (2:45)

But how do you think she got that way?

Tony Brueski (2:47)

Well, she was born that way. It's probably an element to that. But she was also raised by a woman who manipulated anyone and everyone around her at every turn she went. Why that piece of the story some people don't want to process is beyond me. Because it's there and it's confirmed by people, far more people than Gypsy Rose Blanchard.

The man who prosecuted Gypsy Rose for second degree murder said this at the plea hearing, Gypsy Blanchard suffered 20 years of abuse at the hands of her mother and her mother using that abuse to facilitate fraud. That's prosecutor Dan Patterson. He wasn't on Gypsy's side. He was trying to put her away forever. He was the one sending her to prison. He had the medical records, the financial trail, and the doctor shopping pattern that spread across state lines. And he didn't need Gypsy's word for any of it. If she's the liar, they say she is. And I believe she is.

Why does every record that doesn't have her name on it say the same thing?

About Dee Dee? Why is it that the narrative of Dee Dee does not just come from Gypsy?

It doesn't. And that's where you lose me. That's where you lose a lot of people with it. Because the argument doesn't make sense.

Was Gypsy, now, I get the argument of, was Gypsy as much of a victim here as has been portrayed in movies and such?

You know, I would venture to say there's certainly an element there where that got overplayed. I would certainly say that because at a certain point, she seemed to very much be going along with the ruse.

But again, she's been participating in this ruse. She's been groomed into this ruse from a very young age. She wasn't a seven year old calling the shots with her mom. Her mom was calling the shots, manipulating and doing horrible things to her daughter.

As she got older, could some of that power dynamic shifted? I guess in theory a little bit, but how do you think she got there? Who do you think made her this way? How do you think she became this manipulative creature that she appears to be? And I'm basing that on the phone calls y'all are talking about. I've heard, yeah, it's insane.

But you also can't take the word of Gypsy Rose with any sort of solid ground. You can't argue in one breath, she's manipulative. You can't believe anything she says. And then in the next one, well, this is what she says about her mom. So it must be true. Well, which is it? Again, it's a gray area. And again, I don't understand why people are trying to die on this hill. It's a weird semantic of this case of two very unhealthy, broken people. One happened to create the other. One happened to groom the other. One's dead because the one that got groomed got sick of it and became her own monster herself.
