The world's top economic leaders are gathering in the US this week, and what BookTok is doing for bookstores.
From Marketplace in Washington, I'm Kimberly Adams. Fresh off his major speech in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, last week, Treasury Secretary Scott Besant is on the other side of the country, in Asheville, North Carolina, hosting the group of 20 finance ministers today and tomorrow. Attending will be top economic officials from 19 major economies and the European Union. And they have a lot on their plate, including US tariffs and the ongoing war in the Middle East. Marketplace's Nancy Marshall Genza reports.

Treasury Secretary Scott Besant has his own agenda for the summit. He wants to talk about things like economic growth, the mounting dead of G20 member countries, reducing regulation and boosting energy production. But the war in the Middle East will be hovering in the background. Besant wants other countries to help the US isolate Iran economically. Besant told the Associated Press yesterday, the Treasury Department is planning to levy sanctions on another bank. It's accusing of still doing business with Iran.
But other countries at the G20 summit may want to talk about other things like tariffs. All of the G20 members were hit with new US import taxes last month of 10% to 12.5% after the US accused them of not doing enough to enforce bans on forced labor. They could be in line for even more tariffs because of US allegations that they overproduce and then flood the market with exports. I'm Nancy Marshall-Genser for Marketplace.

We're continuing to follow the trade war between the US and Canada. Last week, the United States pushed up its tariffs on $20 billion worth of Canadian goods at 50% and the Trump administration is threatening more taxes on imports. Canada has hit back with similar tariffs which are set to go into effect on September 8th. So where does that leave US consumers? Likely paying higher prices for cars and trucks. That's according to Chris Lowe, Chief Economist at FHN Financial in New York.
**Chris Lowe** (2:39)
Even though there are US companies that manufacture in Canada, Ford and GM particularly, they will have to pay tariffs on the cars that are made there.
And so that's probably where the biggest impact is. But beyond that, housing costs are affected by lumber prices, they're affected by the prices of cabinetry, and we import an awful lot of that from Canada too.

And today is Tim Cook's last day as the CEO of Apple. He took over the role in 2011 after Steve Jobs resigned. Under Cook's tenure, Apple released now ubiquitous products like AirPods and the Apple Watch. John Ternes, Apple's Senior Vice President of Engineering, takes over as CEO tomorrow.
