What are the secrets behind the Lord of the Rings saga?
Thanks for asking!
The three Lord of the Rings stories quickly became huge hits when first released as novels in the 1940s. They built a cult fanbase largely thanks to the fantastical universe created by author JRR Tolkien. But his works reached a whole other dimension with the epic Hollywood adaptations of the 2000s. These blockbusters really brought the stories to life, wowing audiences with stunning visual effects and an Oscar-winning musical score. A number of films based on the life of Bilbo Baggins then followed, but the story didn't end there.
Fans are currently getting stuck in to the Rings of Power, the latest series linked to the Lord of the Rings universe. The first episodes were released on Amazon Prime Video in early September 2022 Let's take a few minutes to discuss some of the little known secrets behind the massively successful franchise. How did Tolkien come up with the idea of creating the Lord of the Rings universe? What a lot of people don't know is that Lord of the Rings started out from the creation of imaginary languages. As a student, Tolkien created a number of dialects that can be found in the story. They became the cornerstones of his universe. The story itself was strongly inspired by the First World War, which saw Tolkien serve in the British Army. Indeed, a letter written by Tolkien in 1960 revealed that the dead marshes of Middle Earth were inspired by his personal experience at the Battle of the Somme.
What secrets did the Hollywood films bring? With any cinematic adaptation comes filming secrets. The casting could have actually been very different to how it turned out. First of all, for one of the leading characters, Frodo Baggins, Elijah Wood wasn't in with much of a chance to start with, as Peter Jackson had his heart set on finding a British actor for the role. But the young actor was so determined that he learned to put on a British accent and sent several videos to the director, who ended up being convinced.

Let's talk about another important character, Aragorn. Irish actor Stuart Townsend was actually hired for the role before being dismissed for creative differences, with some saying Jackson felt he was too young. Viggo Mortensen, 14 years his senior, took his place, but only once filming had already started. To top it off, the Danish-American actor knew absolutely nothing about the Lord of the Rings story. But his 12-year-old son Henry was a huge fan, and the young boy's enthusiasm persuaded his father to take the role. Did Tolkien leave any loose ends in his story? If you look in close detail, he actually addressed almost all of the questions that one might come up with about his universe. We know everything there is to know about Middle-earth and all the different creatures that inhabit it. One of the rare questions Tolkien never definitively addressed was the obscure origins of the orcs. Some fans have suggested they were descendants of tortured elves, but the author himself never confirmed that theory.
