What are the best ways of beating procrastination?
Thanks for asking.
Do you ever feel like you're always in a rush, constantly getting things done at the last possible time? It could be paying a bill, cleaning your home, or even recording a podcast. Well, you're certainly not alone in that respect. According to Deacon Joseph Ferrari, who specialises in the area, 20% of us are chronic procrastinators.
And a 2020 survey by Micro Biz Mag found that just 15.6% of people say that they never procrastinate. So it's something that affects almost all of us from time to time. And of course, it can be a cause of stress and anxiety when we actually get around to doing whatever it is we've been putting off. So let's discuss some ways of beating that pesky habit. Why do we procrastinate anyway? It's a complex phenomenon that can have a few different causes. In 2016, business coach and author Caroline Webb wrote that our brains are programmed to procrastinate in Harvard Business Review. She explained that being averse to completing tasks is common when it's something that will only bring us benefits in the future. The immediate hassle of completing the task is concrete and tangible, whereas the benefit is more abstract and uncertain. We may prioritize our short-term mood, even if we know in the back of our heads it's going to cause us more stress later on.
One theory suggests that there's a balance of the anxiety about getting something done, and the anxiety about missing a deadline. Only at a certain point does the latter overtake the former. Up until then, we're just not anxious enough about being late. If we're hardwired like that, it must be impossible to stop procrastinating. Well, you need to be conscious of your brain's mechanisms, and then outsmart them. It's important to realize that the benefits of doing something outweigh the costs of putting it off through procrastination. One way of taking action is to break down a task into subtasks, which are easier to accomplish and therefore less overwhelming. For example, if you're planning to write a novel, that's of course a huge undertaking. But a simple first step might be emailing someone you know who has already written one to get their advice. That's not so intimidating now, is it? Getting organized also helps. If you have a prioritized to-do list, you can plan out your schedule more effectively. Of course, that's only half the battle. You then need to stick to your plan. Try to work out when in the day you're most effective, and use that time to tackle the hardest or least pleasant tasks that you may have been putting off. Another tip is to talk to others about what you're working on and when you need to get it done by. We're all sensitive to others' opinions of us to some degree, and you won't want to disappoint once you've committed to meeting a deadline. It's important to identify why you tend to procrastinate and forgive yourself for doing so in the past. Procrastination is often confused with laziness, but they're actually very different. There you have it.
