President Xi is coming to Washington to reciprocate from when President Trump went to China in May. Trade is going to be at the top of the agenda. AI, given everything that's been happening recently, is high on the list of things to discuss. They might bring up other issues, things like Taiwan or Chinese ag purchases or aircraft purchases, maybe Chinese investment in the United States. The state dinner on Thursday night is shaping up to really be a who's who of some of the biggest name CEOs in the US in both tech and finance. Jamie Dimon of JP Morgan, Jane Fraser of Citibank, but then on the tech side, Jensen Huang of NVIDIA, Satya Nadella of Microsoft, Sundar Pichai from Google, Yuan Musk, Tim Cook, the list just goes on.

It's The Drew Mariani Show on Relevant Radio.

Drew Mariani (0:51)

Yeah, that's CNBC on the high stakes meeting between President Trump and Xi Jinping. Good afternoon. I'm Drew Mariani. We got a lot to get into today. Thank you for being here.

Thanks for allowing me to be part of your afternoon. Tomorrow, President Trump will welcome Xi Jinping to the White House for what some are saying is going to be one of the most consequential meetings between the world's two most powerful countries. And we've got trade to discuss there, of course, as Taiwan. You have artificial intelligence, or the president wants to rebrand it, super intelligence. We should talk about that, Nick. That's another issue. The name change.

Rare earth minerals is another one of those big issues. Iran, that's the elephant in the room. And of course, you've got the Uyghurs and religious persecution. There's a million things that he can talk to them about. Question of whether American, you know, whether or not, as a nation, we can reduce our dependence on China before the next crisis hits. I think that's really important for us as a nation. But there may be a much bigger story here, too.

Much bigger than what Trump and Xi say to one another tomorrow because while the cameras are focusing on the summit, we have been quietly trying to rebuild something that had allowed to erode for decades. And that's our technological and our industrial independence from China.

We are dependent on them. And we're going to talk with Steve Mosher. He's going to be joining me in just a second. But before I do that, I want to just give you a quick programming note. Tomorrow, I hope you'll be able to tune into the podcast. I'll be anchoring coverage for the network here of the Sheen, Bishop Sheen beatification along with my colleague Brooke Taylor. And we're going to stream that live to you. You can watch it on Relevant Radio Plus, Facebook, YouTube, and of course, you can tune in to the broadcast here. You can also get it on your mobile app. So we're going to give you complete coverage. And when that wraps up, we'll jump back into the studio here for additional talk with you. So make sure you set your calendar and join us for what will certainly be a historic day for this country. But let's talk a little bit about this, right? This is a huge story. Xi arrives in Washington today, and the president is going to personally meet him at Joint Base Andrews. Tomorrow, the White House is planning this elaborate state arrival, a military honors and a state dinner, and flyovers with B-2 bombers and F-22s.

And I was struck, because I was reading up on this a little bit earlier this morning. I didn't realize this, this is Yi's first state visit to Washington in more than a decade. I think, can that be true? Is that real? I thought he came, I must be wrong. And underneath all the ceremony, of course, is these important geopolitical issues. So let's talk about that right now with Steve Mosher. If you want to check him out, check out the organization, Population Research Institute, pop.org. He is recognized as one of the world leading authorities in the population in our country, especially in China. And Steve, it's great to have you back. I saw you over the weekend. I think it was over the weekend or sometime earlier in the week doing a hit on China. On, I think it was Fox. I glimpsed John. Great job, great conversation. It's good to have you with us.

Steve Mosher (4:07)

It's good to be with you again, Drew. And I'm always happy to do a hit on China.

Drew Mariani (4:11)

Yeah, no kidding. Well, your expertise, I'm sure, is in demand. This is a, it's a huge and developing story. You know, President Trump is unlike any other president that we've had, and I think Xi has a respect for him. I would think he does.
