President Trump coming to a new agreement with Iran last night to extend the ceasefire and begin a new round of negotiations over Tehran's nuclear program, while ordering the removal of the US naval blockade on Iran and, with Iran's agreement, preparing to reopen the Strait of Hormuz after the deal is formally signed on Friday. The president writing on Truth Social that the agreement will bring peace and security to the whole region, adding that the strait will reopen Friday following mine removal operations, allowing oil to once again flow freely through the critical shipping route, something it was doing prior to the US launching this war.
The breakthrough coming after months of difficult negotiations and on a day in which the emerging agreement appeared to be on the verge of collapse. Israel launching an attack on the southern suburbs of Beirut on Sunday, despite Iran demanding that any agreement with the US also end the fighting in Lebanon, which Israel says was in retaliation for more attacks by Hezbollah in the region. Follow that? The strike prompting the Iranians to raise the possibility that the regime could walk away from the negotiations. President Trump reportedly calling Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu after the attack, expressing his frustration in blunt terms. Here was the direct quote Mr. Trump gave to Axios, colorful language included, quote, Why did Bibi have to do a fucking attack? I was so pissed off, I let him know. He has no fucking judgment. I let him know that. The president separately telling Fox News, he asked Netanyahu, quote, What the fuck are you doing? Instructing the prime minister not to conduct any additional strikes.
President Trump then publicly calling on all sides to stand down, writing on Truth Social, quote, There should be no more attacks by Israel anywhere in Lebanon, but there should also be no more attacks by any other party, including Hezbollah against Israel, adding, quote, This could be the beginning of a long and beautiful peace. Let's not blow it.
Hours later, Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif announcing that the US and Iran had reached an agreement following negotiations mediated by Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey. Sharif writing on X, quote, Both sides have declared the immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon. The agreement expected to be formally signed this Friday in Switzerland, following technical meetings between the two sides throughout the week. Vice President JD. Vance appearing on Fox shortly after the announcement, outlining what the administration describes as the agreement's three major achievements.
