Trump is Demanding SAVE Act

My name is Nigel, Jason Hammer right over there. So Donald Trump was going to sign this bipartisan housing bill known as the 21st Century Road to Housing Act. Getting ready to put pen to paper. It was designed to increase affordable housing, right? And then he said, no thanks, we're not going to do anything. I was about to say the D word. We're not going to do anything until we pass the Save America Act first. Is that what happened?

That's what happened.

**Nigel** (0:33)
Basically, put the brakes on the 21st Century Road to Housing Act or anything else until we pass the Save America Act first, which is basically got to prove you're a citizen, register to vote, you got to show an ID to vote. It's pretty simple.

**Jason Hammer** (0:47)
There are a few other things that are on the back end of that, like protections for children against transgender surgeries, protecting women's sports. Those were the things that were kind of added to the back end. But I don't think it makes or breaks the bill either way. It comes down to voter identification. And in order for this to pass through, you need 60 votes or to break the filibuster. And Senate's majority leader, John Thune, doesn't really seem like he's in all that much of a hurry to try to scoop up some votes or to break that filibuster.
Now, reports are circulating that earlier today, the president took John Thune into a room and read him the riot act.
So those are the reports that are out there right now.

Now there are Republicans that don't want to sign it because a lot of it has to do with mail-in voting and well, my constituency likes the mail-in votes, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. So they're not going to sign it.

**Jason Hammer** (1:47)
And there's also just some squish, weak ass Republicans that are on their way out the door. Right. You've got Cassidy in Louisiana, Cocaine Mitch in Kentucky, assuming he's breathing at this point. I mean, that dude, every other week, he's falling down. He's injured. Seems like he's in poor health. There's a number of other East Coast's, quote unquote, Republicans, Collins, Murkowski. You've got Alaska. You've got Maine that are a little squirrely when it comes to this stuff.
But the polling shows even Democrat constituents think identification for voting is a good idea.

That's it. Even the Dems do it.

**Jason Hammer** (2:29)
Earlier today, President Trump, before he allegedly screamed at Thune to find the votes, spoke to some reporters about Thune, saying that he doesn't have the votes. The Senate Majority Leader John Trump has told you many times, he doesn't believe that they have the votes to pass it.

That's what being a leader is about. He's a leader. John's a leader. That's what being a leader about. Look, we have to be able to get proof of citizenship when you vote. Otherwise, we don't have elections. We have to be able to get voter ID.
So John is a leader, and hopefully he can get the votes.

**Jason Hammer** (3:03)
Narrator, he's not a leader and won't get the votes.

He's not getting the votes.

**Jason Hammer** (3:10)
So we'll see what happens. I mean, Trump can huff and puff and scream at Thune all he wants. And he's right. He's right to do that.
But Thune's not going to do anything unless you want to get rid of the filibuster, which some would say, do it, because the minute the Democrats get power, it's going to happen anyway.

Exactly.

So what's the danger of doing it now? If the Democrats get the presidency, the House and the Senate, here comes a packed Supreme Court. Here comes state after state after state being added to the Union.
So might as well make voter identification a thing now while you have the power. But not everybody sees it that way.
