Here's your morning TNB Tech Minute for Monday, July 27th. I'm Imani Moise for the Wall Street Journal. NVIDIA is teaming up with SpaceX, Microsoft, Palantir and dozens of other tech companies to build an AI defense program following the recent OpenAI hacking incident of Hugging Face. The initiative, called the OpenSecure AI Alliance, is developing open source programs to give companies access to tools to help fend off AI cyber attacks. In a statement today, the coalition said cyber defenders need open frontier agentic systems for self-defense. The incident last week highlights growing concern among industry executives and government officials about AI systems causing cyber attacks, which have prompted the White House to increase oversight of AI models and push the private sector to deploy AI for defensive purposes.
Memory chip maker CXMT soared in its stock market debut to become the most valuable company listed in mainland China. The company shares jumped more than 400 percent to reach valuation of $484 billion after its first day of trading in Shanghai. Its market value was just short of China-based internet company Tencent, which is listed in Hong Kong and is the most valuable company in that market. CXMT is China's national champion in the fast growing business for memory chips, dominated until now by three companies, SK Hynix and Samsung in South Korea and Micron Technology in the US.
And major companies across the US are starting to hire again after holding back, reversing months of pullbacks as executive realized they need humans to work alongside AI. Companies like Railroad Giant, CSX, Google Parent Alphabet and government contractor Booz Allen Hamilton are expanding headcount to meet growth goals and handle technology demands. Layoffs are also shrinking. According to federal data, the most recent week of US jobless claims was the lowest on record since 1969
