TNB Tech Minute: OpenAI’s Head of Data Centers Leaves Company

Here's your afternoon TNB Tech Minute for Tuesday, August 25th. I'm Julie Chang for the Wall Street Journal. We exclusively report that a key executive overseeing OpenAI's data center build out has left the company. People familiar with the matter say Chris Malone left the company last week. He's the latest in a wave of leadership departures at OpenAI as a Chachi PT maker works toward an IPO expected next year. The company also projected to increase its computing spending to $750 billion through 2030 Malone joined OpenAI as head of data centers in March 2025 Before that, he led Meta's data center strategy and was a senior director at Google focused on data center technology.
In another exclusive, Anthropic is expected to tell investors its total addressable market is above $30 trillion. That's according to people familiar with the matter. The amount would top SpaceX's $28.5 trillion estimate. Anthropic more than doubled its revenue to $11.6 billion in the second quarter. Sources say the AI company could aim to raise as much as $100 billion in the offering. And it's aiming for a valuation of about $2 trillion above the $1.77 trillion valuation SpaceX garnered. Anthropic's plans are still being discussed and the figures could change. The company is expected to unveil its IPO financial disclosure documents in the next few weeks that could set it up to go public as soon as September or early October.
Finally, Counterpoint Research projects global shipments of flat panel displays will fall 4.7 this year, as rising memory costs push up smartphone and tablet prices and weaken consumer demand. However, OLED and mini LED displays remain bright spots as brands prioritize premium products, and automotive displays continue to outperform other segments as vehicles incorporate more and larger screens.
