Here's your afternoon TNB Tech Minute for Thursday, July 23rd. I'm Imani Moise for the Wall Street Journal. Alphabet said it owned $94.1 billion worth of SpaceX shares, about a 6% stake in the newly public company. That's according to a quarterly filing published today. Google has a long history of investing in SpaceX. In May, the Wall Street Journal reported the two companies were discussing a rocket launch deal to help develop orbital data centers. SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has expressed interest in the unproving technology.
The European Union fined Alphabet's Google about $1 billion for breaching its digital competition rules. The block's executive arm said today that Google unfairly favored its own services on its widely used search engine and that the company imposed restrictions on app developers, preventing them from freely steering users and other offers outside of the company's play store. Google said the EU's rules are making its product offerings in Europe worse. The move risks aggravating trade tensions with the Trump administration, which has repeatedly lashed out at the EU over its tech regulations, as it prepares new tariffs on foreign goods.
And two US. Congress members have introduced bipartisan legislation that would require AI developers to maintain the ability to slow down, suspend and shut down models if they pose serious risks. The proposal, dubbed the AI Kill Switch Act, comes after OpenAI disclosed that two of its systems escaped a testing environment and compromised systems at another company, Hugging Face. The bill would give the Homeland Security Department authority to order companies to take emergency action against AI systems that could cause catastrophic harm. It would generally cover AI systems developed using more than $100 million worth of computing power and companies that generate at least $500 million in annual revenue from those systems.
