Here's your morning TNB Tech Minute for Friday, August 28th. I'm Danny Lewis for the Wall Street Journal. A federal judge has ruled that the Trump Administration's blacklisting of Anthropic violated the AI company's First Amendment rights. In the ruling late Thursday, the judge found that the government didn't provide evidence that Anthropic was an actual national security risk. She said the Trump Administration acted in unlawful retaliation to the lawmakers' public pushback against the Pentagon's use of AI.
The judge directed the government to rescind all guidance, directives, communications, or instructions to blacklist and label Anthropic a supply chain risk. The Defense Department didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.
South Korea plans to give its entire population free access to premium, generative AI services. It's the first state-led offering to treat the technology like a public utility. The AI tools will be linked directly to government systems and allow South Koreans to book doctors' appointments, receive help with apartment hunting, or get tax advice. The program seeks to connect more people with homegrown AI tools in a push for AI sovereignty and to avoid over-reliance on models from the US and China. Seoul said three tech consortia will provide the public services for the government's AI for All initiative, including the country's two largest telecom companies and the operator of South Korea's so-called Everything app.
And Nvidia is pausing some revenue sharing details with AI cloud providers less than two months after announcing it. That's according to people familiar with the matter. The precise reason for the decision couldn't be learned, but some Nvidia employees expressed concern to current and potential customers that the program could draw antitrust scrutiny. The move comes as Nvidia faces growing scrutiny over its use of its balance sheet to support projects that, in turn, create demand for its chips. Whereas before, you may need to be really good at analysis, now the skill might be how do you prompt these tools to get the right answers and outcomes. And so for us, it's a really big priority to help companies to understand how do you need to change the operating model of your organization and change the underlying capabilities of the people that are interacting with the technology. And when you see that all humming together, it can be really, really special.
