Welcome to Fashion Neurosis, Tim Walker.

Tim Walker (1:26)

Thank you very much, Bella. So it's an honor to be lying here with all the people that have lain here before, those that have come before. Very special and very, very flattered. Thank you for asking me.

Bella Freud (1:40)

Well, the honor is mine. So thank you.

And can you tell me what you're wearing today and why you chose these particular clothes?

Tim Walker (1:50)

Well, I knew I was coming here and I thought to myself, I feel like dressing up today. I feel like dressing up for Bella.

And my friend Charles Jeffery is helping me with an outfit for the exhibition opening. And he showed me this suit and said, I think you should take that. And I thought, I'm going to wear that to Bella's because I think of you in a suit.

And that's why I'm wearing it. And I'm wearing it with a belt that I did over. I don't know whether Charles would like that or not, but he would because actually when I was dressing up, I heard his head in my voice. I heard his voice in my head. And I heard him go, oh yes, do that. So I put a belt over it. And then I did a red sock. I always wear red socks, but they had a hole in the toe. And I thought, I can't, in case I have to take my shoes off. I don't want people to see I've got a hole in my toe. So I put the white socks on. And then I've got these clogs, stompy clogs. And that's what I'm wearing.

Bella Freud (3:01)

Where are the clogs from? Are they from Charles Jeffrey?

Tim Walker (3:05)

No, they're not from Charles. They're from a company called Needles. And they specialize in clogs. But what I love about them is the kind of Burghain, metal-y, clompy, cloggy thing.

Bella Freud (3:20)

They're quite clockwork orange, aren't they? They're really like very aggressive and very aesthetic.

Tim Walker (3:27)

Oh, we love that reference.

How many times have we looked at that? How much, did you look at that for your collections?

Bella Freud (3:36)

I remember, I first saw it in Paris because it was illegal to show clockwork orange in England for ages. There was one cinema in Paris that only showed clockwork orange. So I went to Paris with a friend when I was 18 We went to see the film and then I had the album and I used to play that demented music over and over again. I've never seen it since because it was so embedded in some place in my system that keeps music and atmosphere, and it stayed there, the violence of it.

But, God, it was so good.

Tim Walker (4:23)

It's such an extraordinary film that I go back and look at again and again.

Yeah, all the time. Particularly, I think about what they're wearing.

Bella Freud (4:34)

Yeah. That makes the whole thing really.

Tim Walker (4:37)

How did they come up with that and why?

Bella Freud (4:39)

Yeah.

Tim Walker (4:40)

It's such a sort of unforgettable power in the straight jackets and the white and the bowler hat and everything.

Bella Freud (4:49)

Yeah.

Tim Walker (4:50)

Yeah.

SPEAKER_5 (4:51)

Powerful stuff, eh?

Bella Freud (4:53)

Yeah. Well, it's a fantastic suit too. It's really beautiful.

You're one of the most celebrated fashion photographers of our time. You had a huge show at the V&A in 2019, and you have another big show opening at the National Portrait Gallery. You shot your first Vogue story at 25 and covers for Italian, British, and American Vogue, and all the high-end magazines, and you shot album covers for Harry Styles and Kate Bush even. I mean, that's so amazing in a Pirelli calendar. And you said, there's an extremity to my interest in beauty. And I wondered, what is extreme beauty to you?
