The more your skin is in the sun, the quicker it will age. That's an undisputable fact.

Ellie Rashid (1:05)

I mean, the aisle that people really need to go down rather than the after sun aisle is the before sun aisle.

She had the most horrific sunburn. Her entire back and shoulders blistered. She was shivering, like her thermoregulation was completely off, like she was really, really sick.

Emma Craythorne (1:23)

The zombie cell are just there, destroying, damaging all the cells nearby.

Ellie Rashid (1:28)

It does, and it's got quite a negative impact on surrounding cells.

Emma Craythorne (1:31)

We all get caught out from time to time. I've been sunburnt. My kids have been sunburnt. Let's do an episode on sunburn.

Hello and welcome to the After Hours Skin Clinic. I'm Dr. Emma Craythorne, a consultant dermatologist and fellowship trained in skin and laser surgery.

Ellie Rashid (1:48)

And I'm Dr. Ellie Rashid, a consultant dermatologist with a Ph.D. in regenerative dermatology.

Emma Craythorne (1:53)

We work at St. John's Institute of Dermatology and one Wellbeck here in central London.

Ellie Rashid (1:58)

But right here is our favourite clinic where we unpack the evidence, challenge the trends and we answer the questions that don't necessarily fit into a 10 to 15 minute consultation.

Emma Craythorne (2:07)

This is the other side of dermatology where we answer the questions you want to ask your dermatologist but don't have time. And if you don't have one, you do now.

Ellie Rashid (2:20)

I am so hot.

I'm literally melting. We're going through one of the hottest heat waves ever in London at the moment. All of my patients are hot and bothered when they're coming in. All the inflammatory skin conditions are flaring. People are walking in with sunburn. I'm so hot.

Emma Craythorne (2:38)

You're always hot. So are you.

And actually part of the reason why, I mean we're going through this horrendous heat wave and I've seen two cases of sunburn in patients in clinic this week. And actually on the way to clinic, I'm just seeing increasing amounts of white strap marks or brown strap marks and then red over the top of it. I even saw a blistering sunburn on the tube. So this is something that people are experiencing quite a lot of. So I thought let's do an episode on sunburn.

Ellie Rashid (3:11)

Brilliant. Brilliant episode. I actually have a friend. So we went on a girl's holiday to sitepress. This is when I was like late teens, early twenties. Group fest went on holiday to sitepress and we're sunbathing as you like did. So you know, we're talking years ago. This is not something I would do now.

And she had the most horrific sunburn. Her entire back and shoulders blistered, big large blisters. She wasn't able to actually enjoy the holiday for two whole days. She was in bed and she was just like drinking plenty of water. She was shivering. Like her thermoregulation was completely off. She was really, really sick with it.

Emma Craythorne (3:52)

People get admitted to hospital.

Ellie Rashid (3:53)

Totally. Well, yeah, your skin is so important. And if it can't function, then you're in trouble.

Emma Craythorne (4:00)

And in fact, everybody has a very different dose that they're able to tolerate. So we call that the minimal erythema dose. So in other words, how much radiation can your skin get before it starts to turn red? And then obviously, if you're exposing it to more, then it will go redder and redder and essentially burn. But there's some people can stay out in the sun for quite some time, whereas others, 10, 15 minutes, and they are burnt. So whenever you sometimes see advice from people saying, oh, you don't need to wear your sunscreen, that might be coming from somebody who has a minimal erythema dose that means they can be in the sun for a bit longer and they don't typically burn. But for some people, particularly people with very pale white skin or red hair, green eyes, that minimal erythema dose for those patients can actually be really, really just a very short period of time. So I think it is important to understand what sunburn is.
