Notre Dame and the Dallas Cowboys, they both got screwed this weekend. Notre Dame got screwed by the officials, by the referees. There should have been one second left on the clock for the Notre Dame fighting Irish to have one more chance to beat BYU. I have no idea how we started the college football season with Michigan getting an undeserved extra second to avoid being beaten by Western Michigan. And then we get to the midway point of the season, and the referees are eliminating a second. This, I've been watching football for 50 plus years. I've never seen this, where you can't get the clock right. You throw an extra second on the clock to protect Michigan. You remove a second from the clock to destroy Notre Dame, the biggest brand in all of college football. And then, and this only happens here. There's a reason why this is the best show Talking Sports. It only happens here. The biggest brand in professional football is being undermined and destroyed by the same thing that created what many people call, oh, this is the greatest weekend in the history of college football. Oh, there were so many upsets.
No, no, no. This college football weekend sucked. And it sucked just as bad as the Dallas Cowboys suck at the beginning of this season. The Cowboys are two and four. They lost to the Green Bay Packers. They weren't competitive last night. Jerry Jones has the same problem as college football. Name, image and likeness, the transfer portal. Players going here and there for money is why college football is so chaotic. And it's why the Dallas Cowboys can't build any sort of winning culture. Let's look. I want to go through this list of the guys Jerry Jones has acquired through the NFL transfer portal over the last two off seasons. You can't build a winning culture. George Pickens, Kenny Clark, Queenan Williams, Rashawn Gary, Dee Winters, Von Miller, Corey Durant, Jalen Thompson, Broderick Jones, Joey Porter Jr. Jerry thinks he can buy a title.
Jerry thinks he doesn't need to build a culture. Jerry thinks he can just cut the check and he's going to win.
It's the same thing that has everybody in college football. It's why Deion Sanders and Colorado, they can't win. You can't buy a culture. You have to build one. You have to hire the best and brightest coaches and let them do their job. Jerry Jones overshadows everything because he wants to control everything. He wants to be the source of everything. I did it. I didn't need Jimmy Johnson. I started cutting checks and I named myself team president and general manager, and I started cutting checks and I'm going to buy my way to a Super Bowl. Same disease you have in college football, and it's why things are so chaotic. People don't understand, oh, this was great. Oh, Auburn won in an upset. Oh, BYU upset Notre Dame. Oh, this is just Florida State upset. Oh, no, they didn't. They got screwed over by bad officiating. But you cannot cut these corners that everybody thinks are easy to cut, and all I got to do is cut these checks. And Auburn beating Georgia, oh, that's just so great. Auburn, oh, Georgia was number one. And it's just every week the number one team gets beat.
Florida beat Texas, Arch Manning sucks, and Florida beat Texas.
Ohio State beating Indiana is not an upset. Tennessee beating Alabama is not some major upset. Those are evenly matched teams. But if you want to know why there's so much chaos, is because there's chaos on everybody's roster. And when half your team, or not half your team, 75% of your team has some agent in your 18, 19, 20-year-old kids' ear telling him, hey, I think Mississippi State is willing to pay us this much, but Stanford's willing to offer this much. If that conversation is going on year-round, during the season, you want to understand why these players and teams are inconsistent?
Everything is focused on money and how much money I can get and which team is willing to pay me this or that. Same thing in the National Football League.
And all this, hey, I'm going to buy this player, I'm going to acquire this player. Hey, isn't there a super team in Los Angeles that went out and got Miles Garrett and Aaron Donald came out of retirement? And they got Devontae Adams and they paired him with Puka Nakua.
And oh, this was going to be a super team. They're two and four.
Football and the sloppiness and the inconsistency of football is ruining football. The quality of play, the pursuit of greatness. This is what people don't understand about college football or fail to articulate and explain. The expectations for college football, and this is why this 2014 playoff deal is a disaster. The fan expectation, there was something great about pursuing perfection in college football. And now that they've gone to the 12 team playoff, and they're headed to the 2014 playoff, and they've totally de-emphasized and annihilated the importance of winning your conference. Don't expect a consistent effort every Saturday. It's never gonna happen. The Saturdays don't matter the way that they used to. There's no sense of urgency. The games have lost their value. And so, don't be shocked when Georgia has a real hard time getting up for Auburn. Don't be shocked. And don't be shocked if Texas has a hard time getting up for Florida, a bad Florida team, or a not great Florida team.
