The entire month of August, really. Like, I guess Congress didn't deliver to us in terms of just sticking around. But instead, we got this trial.

Instead, we've got pure insanity because that's just the way things go.

America still found a way to let us down.

Listen. Okay. The jury began deliberating Thursday afternoon, August 27th. After closing, an instruction sat for a few hours, was sent home around 4 PM without a verdict. They resumed Friday morning at 9 AM Eastern. They've been going at it for about three hours. They have just requested, I guess, the knife and some bags of pills to see if this was a stage situation, presumably. That's what people are speculating.
Two bags of pills and a knife. The judge denied the request, however. This is the only reported note so far. We're going to break a lot of this down and what the options are for the verdict.
Again, I want to just make a point before we bring Jonathan Alpert on here because he's a psychotherapist. We're going to talk about all that. But this is important because we're actually battling the inversion of morality, the inversion of reality. I think it's really important that we take a stand and we keep reminding everybody that we do have laws. There are morals. There is common sense.
We can only have a functioning society if we agree upon certain basic facts. Here to help us unpack all this is Jonathan Alpert. He is a psychotherapist. He sees lots of patients. He's got a new piece out in the New York Post that we want to talk about as well. Jonathan, welcome back to the show. It's good to see you.

Good to see you. Thanks for having me.

Yeah, absolutely. So I want to start here by kind of just examining as if we've never heard about this term before at all. This idea of not guilty by reason of insanity. And the more I think about it, the more I hate it because to me, you're either guilty or you're not guilty or you're guilty and you didn't mean to do it. Maybe you're manslaughter or you did it. And it was self-defense. But it feels like this is a cope for a modern society that is increasingly looking for excuses to let people out of their accountability that they deserve.
Your thought on it. You're the expert on this, on this type of stuff. Yeah.

And I think the moment that you enter mental health into the equation, it does change, it does change things quite a bit. And we're seeing this play out across the nation where you have women and others saying that they identify with Lindsey Clancy, they can be, they can be her or they could be her.
I think it's dangerous, this over identification. There's a huge, huge difference between postpartum depression and postpartum psychosis, which is what's being looked at and really at the heart of this case. Postpartum depression affects approximately 12 percent of mothers who give birth. Whereas postpartum psychosis, it's so small, it's such a rare occurrence. It's 0.1 to 0.2 percent, so there's a huge, huge difference. When we make the leap from depression to psychosis, that's dangerous. I think the other thing that we're seeing or could potentially see is the reverse of what these women, what these people are hoping. Instead of destigmatizing it, it might make it more of a stigma because women might feel like they can't come out and talk about how depressed they are.
