Hey, little ones, it's time to snuggle up tight as we begin our story and settle into the night. Soon you'll drift off into a wonderful sleep, thanks to this story of a little white sheep. It's from an Easter in Sleepy Forest long, long ago, when Coco was a tot and the spring began to show. The little koala met a brand new baby lamb, and with a hello and a hug, their friendship began. So let's go there now and begin our sweet show. Happy Easter, sweet dreams. And here we go.
It was Easter morning when a little lamb was born. The sun stretched its golden rays across the meadow, touching the lamb's soft wool with warmth. The lamb's mother nuzzled her gently, helping her stand on her wobbly legs. The lamb teetered and tottered and yawned. She looked around the wildflower meadow and bleated. Her mum nuzzled her and said, Welcome, little one.
As the baby lamb wandered over to a nearby patch of flowers and buried her nose in a violet fluff of lavender, her mum smiled. Well, that's that then, she said. You, my little lamb, will be named Lavender.
Not too far away, in a cosy cottage in Sleepy Forest, lived a little koala named Coco. Coco was very young, but adventurous, and his favourite thing was exploring the world around him. On this special Easter morning, Coco's parents took him to visit the meadow.
Look, Coco, whispered his mother, a new little lamb was born today. Coco's eyes widened with wonder. The lamb was small, just like him. When their eyes met across the meadow, something magical happened. It was as if they knew each other already. Coco raised a little grey paw, and waved, and the sheep tipped its head to one side, and smiled. Can I say hello? asked Coco. His father nodded and carefully brought Coco closer to the lamb. The lamb's mother watched attentively, but could tell that Coco was a kind koala, who seemed like he might become Lavender's first-ever friend. Hi! said Coco softly. I'm Coco. The lamb blinked her big, gentle eyes, then took a step toward Coco. They were almost the same height, and when they stood face to face, they both smiled. The lamb's smile was wonky and sweet. Coco's was kind and sleepy. Coco was always a little sleepy.
I think she wants to be your friend, said Coco's mother.
I think so too, said the lamb's mother.
As the days grew warmer, Coco would visit Lavender every morning. Lavender's mother would watch them from nearby as they began their daily adventures around Sleepy Forest. Good morning, Lavender, Coco would say each day. Where shall we explore today?
Lavender would reply with a gentle, Good morning, best friend. And Coco would grin. How sweet the little lamb was. One sunny morning, Coco arrived wearing a little backpack. I brought something special, he told Lavender. It's for a picnic. Mama says it's finally warm enough for picnics. Lavender trotted happily beside Coco as they set off towards the edge of Sleepy Forest. It was full of friendly trees that seemed to wave hello with their branches and dotted with flowers, Buttercups, dandelions, poppies and even Lavender. Look, Lavender, Coco pointed to the ground. Daffodils, they weren't here yesterday.
Lavender sniffed at the bright yellow flowers that had appeared overnight, as if by magic. I think they appeared just for us, the little lamb said. Let's count them, suggested Coco. He pointed to each flower one by one.
One, two, three.
Lavender watched attentively, her tail wiggling with each number. Ten, there are ten daffodils today. Let's check to see if there are any more tomorrow. Lavender gently nudged another flower hidden behind a rock. Oh, eleven, Koko clapped his hands. Good spotting, Lavender. They continued their walk, Lavender's little hooves making soft tapping sounds beside Koko's tiny footsteps. The forest was coming alive all around them.
The trees are changing, Koko observed, pointing up at the branches. Little green buds were forming on what had been bare branches all winter long. Lavender stretched her neck to look up too. Those are baby leaves, explained Koko. My mum says they're waking up after their winter sleep. Lavender gave a soft bar of understanding.
Winter is the sleepy season, Koko continued, remembering what his parents had taught him. Then comes spring, when everything wakes up, that's now. Then summer, when it's hot and we can play in the water. And then autumn, when the leaves turn orange and fall down.
Lavender listened to Koko's explanation, her ears twitching with interest.
Which season do you think you're like best, Koko asked.
Lavender scratched her chin.
Winter, she said. My mama says the snow is as white as my wool.
