Hey, everyone, welcome to Fat Mascara. I've got Dr. Amanda Kahn in the studio today. I've been wanting to record with her for a really long time. She is a board certified internist, but here's the best part, she is the longevity specialist. Longevity is one of the biggest buzzwords right now in beauty, and we talked to her about exactly what that is. We're going to be talking about ferritin. We're going to be talking about, yes, and we'll talk about what ferritin is as well. It's one of my favorite topics.

Peptide, she is the peptide princess. She did not give herself that nickname somebody else did, but it absolutely cracks me up. We're going to be talking about why there's a need for longevity doctors and exactly what they're offering that in the United States, our current medical system does not. I love this conversation and I love her. She is a specialty doctor with such empathy, and I just think she's a fantastic person. So, Amanda, take it away.

Dr. Amanda Kahn, welcome to Fat Mascara. I'm so happy you're here.

Amanda Kahn (1:09)

I'm so happy to be here too. Jess, this is one of my favorite podcasts, so thank you so much for having me.

Jessica Matlin (1:15)

Thank you. Do you know how hard it is to go get an appointment with Dr. Amanda Kahn? We're all in Amanda Kahn's office this morning or whatever time you're listening, it is early here, and you're first in the office right now, and we are here with you. You're in the Upper East Side right now.

We are at the Longevity Doctor's office, and I just have to back up for a second and say, what the heck is a Longevity Doctor?

Amanda Kahn (1:41)

That's a great question.

Jessica Matlin (1:43)

No shade. I just think like, I'm gonna throw in a personal anecdote here for a second because I went to go see you like a year or two ago, maybe a year and a half ago or something, and I told my parents that I went to go see you and I had all this information. I was so excited about all the findings because they were deeper and more informative than I've ever gotten from any doctor. We sat together for two hours, right? It was like late and I left. Night had fallen when I left, okay? Night had fallen, okay?

And I had so much incredible insights and it was just the most incredible. We're gonna get into it, so I'm gonna be blabbering on, but I'm really excited. And after I told my father all this stuff, my dad goes, Jesse, what kind of doctor is this? And I was like, Dad, it's a longevity doctor. And he goes, what is a longevity doctor? And I was like, hum, hum, hum. I was like, I said, first I was like, it's all the rage. And then I said, there are people who, now I'm gonna let you fill in the blank.

Who take a more proactive approach to your health. We want to know things and trends that may start becoming a problem with age and intervene on the earlier side. Because the more time we have to address problems, the better equipped we are to support you through every decade of life. So I wouldn't say that it's as glamorous and futuristic as it sounds. To me, as an internist and as a board certified internal medicine physician, and I have a strong passion for primary care, I always knew I wanted to go into outpatient medicine. I think this is just the way that outpatient primary care is headed.

But I'm afforded the time and the luxury of getting to know my patients really well and spending as much time with them as they need to do a really deep dive into their health, what their labs are telling us, what their imaging is telling us, what the patient themselves is telling us. Because in a more traditional setting, like where I came from and how I trained, we really didn't have more than 15 to 20 minutes with a patient.

So I think a lot of people, obviously longevity is a buzzword. We hear it used all the time, but I think it really has to be grounded in traditional. It's not a departure from traditional medicine. I see it as building on and advanced primary care, where most patients get maybe the basics, just their cholesterol checked, a few things that hopefully will go into about what I like to check. But I think that I was just coming from a world where we're checking boxes.
