The Irony of Setting Up a Homeschool Space

The Gritty Gospel with Christy Young

October 8, 2026

You planned the perfect homeschool room. You bought the shelves, organized the curriculum, labeled the bins, sharpened the pencils, and created a beautiful space where everyone would surely gather each morning with cheerful hearts and eager minds.

And I love that, because sometimes, yeah, having a single table where you all come and gather, but you get to be faithful to the Lord. Oh, y'all, that is a huge win. And that is all you need.

Heather Copeland (0:11)

That is all you need.

Christy Young (0:14)

Alrighty, you guys, welcome back. This is Christy Young.

Heather Copeland (0:17)

Heather Copeland.

Christy Young (0:18)

With The Gritty Gospel. Y'all, we love y'all, we're so glad to be here. And today, this one's a funny one. We are so excited about this one, because it's all about the irony of setting up a home school space. And here's the deal.

Heather Copeland (0:30)

Did you do it?

Christy Young (0:32)

No, no, wait. Okay, wait. I have an even worse story. Well, go ahead. Are you saying? No, you say your story first. Okay. Well, so I just want to put myself on blasts because that's always fun.

I, in fact, had a sweet friend who hand made us desks for every child. Holy moly.

Heather Copeland (0:49)

Not a desk.

Christy Young (0:50)

Okay. And y'all, this was when we had an older foster kid too. So this sweet, sweet, dear friend of ours made five desks plus, plus Larry a desk. Oh yeah. My desk is still right there, Heather. Look, that desk was, okay. Well, he made desks like those. I have them all in the attic still. Okay.

They're in the attic though, y'all. That tells you all you need to know. And they are beautiful. I mean, we love them, but do we use them?

Heather Copeland (1:18)

No.

Christy Young (1:18)

Negative. Y'all, I have set up, probably, I've tried three or four times to set up spaces. I'm always trying the next thing, right? It's like, I'm like, that didn't work, but maybe this will work.

Heather Copeland (1:28)

Or I'm going to put the whiteboard down here. I'm going to move this down here. I mean, we actually have a homeschool room, y'all. It was called the homeschool room.

It has the walls, had the chalk paint on it. Okay. Okay. This is what we're talking about. I made cubbies and desks for them against the wall that they can go over there too.

We did it for about half a semester, and I started calling it the dungeon. I said, I gotta have some. It really should be a movie room, but at the last minute, we decided to make it an extra room, so it has no windows. Y'all, I gotta have light. I gotta see birds. I can't do that. But so now we're downstairs, and y'all are too. I mean, you're at the kitchen. We're at the kitchen, and you're going in the living room.

Christy Young (2:11)

Yes, and you might be thinking, hey, well, wait a minute. What about that room you're in right now? Okay, can I tell you, we do have a, this is like basically a storage room, okay? It stores all my home school-y things.

Heather Copeland (2:20)

Our office-y room.

Christy Young (2:21)

Office-y room. Y'all, we do not, we do zilch home school in here. Unless my son sometimes wants to do math in here by himself, and he will come shut that door and sit.

Heather Copeland (2:30)

Yeah, we separate.

Christy Young (2:31)

Y'all, he sits on the floor. He doesn't even sit right here at the desk. No, y'all, where we do school, faithfully, is in the kitchen or in the living room.

Heather Copeland (2:38)

Us too, same thing.

Christy Young (2:39)

Okay, so my encouragement is just pump the brakes for a minute. If you're thinking you're going to spend several hundred dollars to get a gorgeous space set up because you think it's necessary in order to have a successful homeschool year, it's absolutely not necessary. So be encouraged and maybe don't put a whole lot of money into it because it may or may not be used. That will be my encouragement.

Heather Copeland (3:04)

I'm over here thinking. I was like, man, I have like the posters. But in my heart, I'm like, you kind of do that when you're first think that because you're still almost like the public school model.

But then it's like the Lord opens your eyes. You're like, no, you really don't want to have that model. I don't want to be rigid. I don't want to be in one room. I want to move around. I want freedom. I want sunlight. I want to do it outside on the trampoline, wherever they go on the porch. I want to do that. But really, I mean, think about when you do homework. It's not in a room. It's going to be at the kitchen table if you have homework to do.
