Hey, friend, it's David Nebinski here in Brooklyn, here at the Portfolio Career Podcast, where we take ownership of your career and design a life that you want to live. This conversation is with Carly Cassidy. She has a podcast called Core Friends, and wrote a Substack post called, I started a podcast about friendship and I don't have any close friends.
Yeah, so she thinks a lot about friendship and has a lot of great ideas and experiences and stories about it. And I wanted to talk to her about these things as friendship has been on my mind recently, as my social life has changed, as I've been focusing more and more on work these days as a solopreneur.
So yeah, I wanted to process and share and talk about these things. So it's really great and fun to talk to Carly about this. The video of this episode will be available on my newsletter at davidnebinski.com/newsletter, when the next Substack goes out on Sunday. But yeah, curious to your thoughts on friendship and what you think of this episode. I'd love to hear any takeaways, ideas, stories, frameworks, et cetera. Send me an email or reach out to me on Instagram or LinkedIn. I'm excited for you to build and grow your portfolio career. Here we go with Carly. My name is David. I'm here with Carly.
**Carly Cassidy** (1:11)
Hello.
**David Nebinski** (1:13)
And we're hanging out here talking about friendship.
**Carly Cassidy** (1:19)
Yes.
**David Nebinski** (1:20)
We also probably will talk about podcasting. It's another thing we've gotten in common.
**Carly Cassidy** (1:24)
That's very meta.
**David Nebinski** (1:25)
Events we've got in common. I know. I know. It's like it's podcasting has been great for friendships for me. Yeah. Events have been great for friendships for me.
Yeah. I feel like we've got a lot of good things to.
**Carly Cassidy** (1:39)
Yeah. Events are how I met the friend who introduced me to you.
**David Nebinski** (1:44)
Yeah.
**Carly Cassidy** (1:46)
I'm shocked you haven't had Yenna on your podcast yet.
**David Nebinski** (1:50)
She has. Oh, she has.
**Carly Cassidy** (1:52)
Oops. I need to listen to that episode. If you're listening to this, you're not.
**David Nebinski** (1:56)
Yeah. 2024
**Carly Cassidy** (1:59)
Okay.
**David Nebinski** (1:59)
Yeah. A while ago.
**Carly Cassidy** (2:00)
Wow.
**David Nebinski** (2:00)
I'm going to go back to the archives. I mean, there's a lot back there. So in a good way. And I feel like now these days, it's kind of just a, yeah, it's like a living and breathing catalog of my life, almost of like what's going on, what's top of mind. And friendship is a category that's on my mind.
**Carly Cassidy** (2:24)
Yeah.
**David Nebinski** (2:25)
And you, do you still have a podcast called Core Friends?
**Carly Cassidy** (2:30)
So funny you should ask, David. Yeah. Yeah. So I, so it goes back to 2023, when I thought I would do a podcast that was called Antisocialite, where I kind of just wanted to archive all my like ridiculous dating stories. Cause I had a bunch and it kind of is hard to like say the same story over and over again. So I was like, Oh, I can just like put them all down and then direct friends.
And I liked comedy at the time, but didn't want to get on stage to do it. I'm too high maintenance for stand up comedy.
My bedtime is too early. I don't like guys in jeans and flip flops. Don't want to see your toes. But I decided to step back from that in 2024, because I lo and behold ran out of stories. I was like, these are not good things that have happened. I would like to not go out searching for more of these. I would like to just live my life.
**David Nebinski** (3:28)
If you run out of stories during this podcast, just let me know. We can decide. You're like, okay, I ran out, I'm good. I thought I had more.
**Carly Cassidy** (3:35)
It was more of like, oh, I shouldn't find more dating disasters. I shouldn't, because I found I was approaching conversations as, oh, this would be a funny story, or this seems like it's going to be bad. Let me go.
So I was like, what am I doing here? I don't want to be that girl. And so I stopped doing that, but I still loved podcasting. I love to talk if it's not already apparent. But I didn't want to talk about dating. I was just tired of it.
But I thought about friendship, because I had over 2024, I just had met so many people through putting myself out there for events and these like retreats abroad. And I especially was making so many intergenerational friends. Like I had like a bunch of friends and people I was meeting who were like 70
