Hi, friends. It's Sheryl, and welcome to Sleep Tight Relax.
You're safe here in your cozy spot tonight. If you are in bed, give your toes a wiggle, and maybe make sure your pillow is exactly how you want it. Some of us are very particular about how we like our pillows, and some people don't even like pillows at all. Tonight, we're going to a farm. We like to think this is a farm on Prince Edward Island where we live, but maybe it's a farm near your place, or an imaginary farm all in your mind. In the story, it's an old farm at the end of summer where the apples are ready to pick. Yummy, delicious apples, I think. Some red, some green, and some yellow.
There's a white farmhouse with green blinds on the windows, and a wide gate in the fence, and a wagon track that goes up past the kitchen door, and past the shed, and past the barn, and all the way to the orchard. It's late in the afternoon. The light is changing color long across the grass, and depending on where you live in the world, it might be getting softer or a little bit harder. The air smells like cold coming. That particular smell, like the season, is just starting to turn. There is a certain crispness to it that makes it seem fresh. And in the orchard, the apple trees are heavy with fruit. The red ones are ready today.
So, let's get you settled in, and then we'll head up that wagon track together. Past the shed, past the barn, all the way to where the yummy delicious apples are.
Let's make sure you are still comfy. Wiggle those toes again if you like. I recommend wiggling your toes. It's fun. If you need to move around a little bit to find your spot, go ahead and do that now.
Now, let's notice how warm it is where you are. Your blanket, your pillow, the air around you. Just take a second and feel it. The warmth of your bed against your back, your legs, the backs of your arms.
Outside, the air is getting cooler. That's what the farm smells like tonight. That first cold coming into the end of summer. But you're not out there. You're in here. And it's warm. And your bed is super comfortable.
Let your shoulders drop. Just let them fall away from your ears, easy and heavy.
Good.
Now, let's take a few big belly breasts together. In through your nose.
In and out through your mouth.
One more. In and out.
Let your hands go soft. Just open them a little and let them rest wherever they are. Your hands have done a lot today. They can stop now. Feel the weight of your body sinking down. Your shoulders, your back, your legs. Heavy and warm and still. The farm is waiting for us, but there's no hurry. It'll be there. The wagon track goes up past the kitchen door, past the shed, past the barn, and the orchard is at the top, and the apples are red and ready, and we have all the time in the world. Take one more breath in and out.
Good, let's go up that track.
Once upon a time, there was a farmhouse, and it was painted white and had green blinds, and it stood not far from the road. In the fence was a wide gate to let the wagons through to the barn. And the wagons going through had made a track that went up past the kitchen door and past the shed and past the barn and past the orchard to the wheat field.
In the orchard grew many apple trees. Some had yellow apples and some had green apples. And some had red apples and some had brown apples. And the yellow apples got ripe before the summer was over. But the green apples and the red apples and the brown apples were not ripe until the summer was over and it was beginning to get cold.
So, one day after the summer was over and it was beginning to get cold, Uncle John saw that the apples on one of the trees were ready to be picked. And they were red apples. So he got out the old oxen and they put their heads down and he put the yoke over and the bows under and hooked the tongue of the ox cart to the yoke. Then he said, Gee up there, buck. Gee up there, star. And the old oxen began walking slowly along past the barn to the orchard. And they turned in through the wide gate into the orchard and went along until they came to the right tree.
