Welcome to the AI to ROI Big Story edition of the podcast. I'm Ray Rike, CEO of Benchmarkit, co-host of the Metrics Brothers podcast, and co-host of the AI to ROI podcast, where I'm joined by Peter Buchanan.
**Peter Buchanan** (0:26)
Yup, I'm Peter Buchanan. I'm the managing partner of NewPlan. Today, Ray, we've got a really big story, because on April 21st, SpaceX announced that it may acquire the AI coding agent startup Cursor for $60 billion or alternatively pay them $10 billion for a computer sharing partnership. That's a really remarkable deal for a four-year-old company founded by four MIT students back in 2022
**Ray Rike** (1:01)
It is remarkable, but the more you dig into the numbers themselves, I find the more complicated this story gets.
Cursor, which by the way, is part of the company called AnySpear. Cursor was released in March 2023 In 36 months, just three years, they get 2.7 billion in annualized revenue. Now, let me make sure that we highlight, annualized revenue is the revenue from March 2026 times 12 It's not actual revenue generated over a 12-month period. But that is amazing revenue growth. But at the same time, Peter, some of the news is coming out recently.
In the latest fiscal year, it lost nearly $900 million on 700 million of revenue. So $900 million loss on 700 I just did my extrapolation. It's like at 2.7 billion, are they going to be losing $3 billion? We don't know that. So I think this deal is not mostly a valuation story. I actually think it's a signal and a cautionary tell about the economics of the AI coding tool market.
**Peter Buchanan** (2:20)
Yeah. I think that's the tension going. That's why we're having this episode. AI coding agent market is generating incredible productivity gains for developers and the companies they work for.
The business model is under stress at the same time, and that's what we're going to go through today. Those two things can both be true at the same time. Ray, what are we covering?
**Ray Rike** (2:45)
Yeah. This is for the listeners to say, if there's something in here, at least you know we're going to cover it, and hopefully it motivates you to stick with us. The first is, how the market is shifted from coding copilots, I mean, an early leader of that was GitHub Copilot from Microsoft, and how it's now moved to autonomous coding agents. What AI coding agents actually means for development teams and the companies they work in. Third, a quick, fast tour of the seven major players in the AI coding tool market.
A little bit about why the SpaceX and Cursor deal happened, and more about what it signals for the industry. A little bit of some of the strategic risk that we keep uncovering, including the Chinese open source threat, and then three potential scenarios that we've crafted of where we see this market possibly going.
**Peter Buchanan** (3:41)
All right. Well, let's dig in.
**Ray Rike** (3:42)
Okay.
Four years ago, we mentioned this before, AI coding tools did one thing. They were copilots, and they typically would predict or suggest your next line of code. The developers were still the drivers of the tool.
AI just suggested that next turn or the next line in the journey.
**Peter Buchanan** (4:05)
Right. Now it's completely different. So today's AI coding agents basically do almost everything. They read the entire code base, they plan a multi-step task, they edit files across a project, they run tests, they submit pull requests with very minimal human direction. So the developer isn't really writing code line by line anymore. They're directing the system that handles execution across defined feature categories. They're like a maestro as opposed to a developer.
**Ray Rike** (4:39)
Yeah, well, being a little bit more centered on metrics and revenue, I'm looking at benchmarks this way. So Anthropics Claude Code, right? To me, it's a benchmark for how fast this category can grow from a revenue perspective.
Anthropics launched Claude Code in May of 2025
It reached $1 billion in annualized revenue. Make sure everyone hears annualized revenue six months later. That was faster than any enterprise software product in history. And just in February 2026, Peter, they crossed that $2.5 billion in annualized revenue. Now, Anthropic, at the same time, over four months, December 25 through around April 26, they went from $19 billion to $30 billion in annualized revenue. So one of the fastest growing software companies in the world, and their Claude Code product was a material influence on that revenue growth.
**Peter Buchanan** (5:41)
It was. And the productivity argument for using the software is compelling. So you can take a senior engineer who can direct a team of AI agents, AI coding agents, to build and ship features that would have required a team of eight developers two years ago. And that's not a vendor claim. That's what companies are actually reporting.
