Welcome back to The Podcast That Rocks, weekly top podcast that talks about news in the world of rock, metal, alternative, mispronunciations and everything in between. My name is Luke.
Alex (0:17)
My name is Alex.
Luke (0:18)
I want to thank you all tuning in on this Wednesday when we were recording. Hope you all are doing well.
It is September 16th. I'm getting over a minor case of strep throat. Alex is getting over some type of weird allergy-type reaction-type thing. So if we both sound off our game, no, we don't. Be nice.
Alex (0:38)
Yay. Humans get sick.
Luke (0:40)
When I was younger, I always had the thing where it's like, oh man, you look tired or oh, you sound awful. Not realizing that's not the nicest thing to say and I grew up.
Alex (0:52)
We'll point it out before you can.
Luke (0:55)
Exactly. We wanted to beat you to the punch. Whoa, Luke sounds disgusting and awful. Awesome. Thank you.
Alex (1:02)
So what's wrong with Alex?
No, there's something wrong with my voice. Deal with it.
Luke (1:09)
Welcome to The Podcast That Rocked. This is what you get. You better like it or not. I don't care anymore.
Alex (1:15)
I can't yell like that. It'll tear me up.
Luke (1:18)
Well, hopefully things are going well for all the Steve's out there. Thank you all so much for tuning in live with us, Steve's. Hope you're doing well. Getting sick does blow from one of the Steve's.
I kind of want to say 50 likes gives us one round of Festival Rocker Flop. We already have a few rounds booked. Some of the Super Chats already came in. Thank you guys so much for getting those in early.
We will continue to do Super Chats. Please get them in. We'll go through every single one of them. $10 or more for a Super Chat. Get to your own Festival Rocker Flop. Last week we only had a few, but one of them was half nightmare, half awesome, and it kind of like broke our brain a little bit, if you remember. So we'll have no repeats because I already put them in a folder. So we get a fresh round. Fortunately, no Nicki Minaj twerking this time.
Alex (2:00)
Yay.
Luke (2:01)
Right? See, it's the little things that keep us going in this dark, dark week.
Alex (2:06)
It really is.
Luke (2:07)
I have a puppy behind us. We're all ready to go.
Are we ready to get into some of the nonsense? Because the subject for our main story is more than just one song. I released a video earlier talking about my thoughts on Joseph from Falling In Reverse and Corey Taylor and Serj Tankian. The overarching story about this is we are now in that full age of collaborations.
This is something you and I have been hoping for and praising and highlighting for quite a while. I myself could go back years thinking this is how rock and metal bands get more of a spotlight. Doing it that way, cross promotion and cross promotion outside of the genres. The first song we're talking about, Joseph, is not outside of the genres, but it's big names in a collaboration. So we're going to talk about that a little bit. And I know the Steves are going to have quite a few thoughts on this. Understandable. Let me share my screen. Wabam. Where'd it go? Oh, there we go. Wabam. Is that what we need? Yeah, there we go. It was earlier this week, I believe on September 14th, Joseph, Falling In Reverse's new song with big production from Corey Taylor and Serj Tankian. This was not a flash of the pan, quick recording where all the bands were together at a festival. This took a while. They filmed a big budget music video with super special effects. According to press releases, no AI was used, which is nice.
I ask now, while you still have some of your voice, Alex, did you hear the song?
Alex (3:46)
I haven't listened yet. My doctor advised me not to.
Luke (3:48)
Oh, well. Five stars on ZocDoc and all the apps. You can yelp a doctor probably. That sounds right.
To be very brief because I made a video, I'll link to that in the comments because I don't want to go too on about this one song.
It's definitely a scatterbrained hodgepodge of different speeds and just transitions that smush together. There are pieces that work.
The first half of the lyrics are rough like the actual edgelord, back of the detention high schooler that's writing down angry things and trying to make it work. But then he gets to some singing with a falsetto, like operatic falsetto. And I might have stripped that away and isolated it and made things worse to prove a point. But besides that, I'm not a fan. They put out worse. The big thing is that Serj Tankian and Corey Taylor on the same song, in very unique spots, there's a great back and forth between Corey and Ronnie. That part works. And then it gets to a full Serj Tankian system of down tributes. Like I'm talking no transition, no blend in, hard cut to a soft rhythm that leads into the drum roll from Chop Suey while Serj is singing about war. Like the actual drum roll, like, doot, doot, doot, doot, you know? I'm not going to keep doing that, but still, it's all just like bam, bam, bam, bam, bam, no cohesion. That's Joseph. For those not aware, Joseph is Ronnie Radke's middle name. He had a single called Ronald come out earlier. This is Joseph. I bet you can imagine there's going to be a song called Radke coming out in the future.
