You know what I find fascinating here, ladies and gentlemen, is the sheer hypocrisy and the double standards of the media. It never really does surprise me, to be honest with you, but we now know that whenever the media, whenever the left, whenever the never Trumpers are accusing President Trump of doing something, it's really they themselves who are guilty of the crimes. And for example, when Barack Hussein Obama is out there saying that Trump is a threat to democracy, it's in fact the policies of Barack Hussein Obama that were in fact the threats to democracy, because now we know, of course, that all of the breadcrumbs leading back to the Russia, Russia, Russia collusion stuff, all of that came from and originated from the demented diseased mind of Barack Hussein Obama. So anyway, all that to say today, just well within the past 45 minutes, we now know that John Bolton, one of the most ferocious anti-Trump people out there who accused President Trump of all sorts of heinous things, has now been officially, well, he has now pled guilty to harboring classified files. Bolton, of course, served as a National Security Advisor in the President's first administration and then turned around and just stabbed the President in the back. So Bolton has now pled guilty in federal court to one count of retaining sensitive government information. And this is all part of a plea deal that he reached with prosecutors. The guy's old, so he could be, and again, part of the deal, prosecutors recommended he be sentenced to no more than five years in prison.
The US. District Judge asked him if he was guilty of the offense, and John Bolton said, I am your honor and I am sorry for it. He initially pleaded not guilty last year. The cases involved, and John Bolton sending a diary-like recollection of his incredibly sensitive work to relatives who were helping him write a memoir.
This is insane. Part of the plea deal, Bolton has agreed to forfeit his government pension. He has to pay a $2.2 million fine. He's going to have to pay half that money within five days of his sentencing and the rest within 90 days. In exchange, they agreed to recommend Bolton face no more than five years in prison at his sentencing hearing, which is scheduled for October. And it will be up to the judge whether to accept that recommendation. Now, in the original indictment, Bolton was charged with 18 counts of transmitting or retaining national defense information. And he faced as many as 10 years behind bars per count. I mean, this guy could have been, he could have spent the rest of his life in prison.
Anyway, Bolton was always out there attacking Donald Trump, when in fact, it was John Bolton who was putting America at risk and putting America in jeopardy. Unbelievable. The fed say that Bolton shared more than 1,000 pages of his work. This is incredibly sensitive stuff through a personal email account. And the irony here is that he was out there saying that it was Donald Trump who was a threat to national security. So anyway, Bolton got fired in 2019 after they clashed over President Trump's foreign policy. You know, Bolton, a big hawk guy, he wanted to go to war with everybody. A lot of the information that was shared had been marked top secret.
Prosecutors said that the information that Bolton emailed to his family members revealed details of human intelligence sources and methods and have been marked top secret, the highest level of national security classification. In other words, Bolton may have exposed some of our assets, our spies, as a result of his actions here. Unbelievable. Bolton's indictment came last October after two other people, including former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James, were targeted for criminal prosecution in separate cases. Look, they weren't targeted. They're accused of crimes. They broke the law.
Unbelievable. So we'll see how all this plays out. I wondered, do you bestow grace here or do we need to send a message that this sort of behavior is not to be tolerated? Does Bolton go to jail for five years or should he just get probation? What do you? I don't know. It's, I mean, that's a tough one. I mean, you want to have compassion and pity. I mean, he's an old man. But I mean, again, this guy broke the law and he put other lives in danger. And quite frankly, the argument can be made that he betrayed not the president, but he betrayed his nation.
