Televangelist Jim Bakker Dies at 86

SPEAKER_1 (0:00)

Jim Bakker, the televangelist, best known for the early 80s, passed away. He was 86

SPEAKER_2 (0:07)

He made a big comeback after, you know, the Tammy Faye Bakker, all the like, didn't he go to jail at some point? Like, he made a big television comeback.

SPEAKER_1 (0:18)

He did. We love a good comeback story in this country.

SPEAKER_2 (0:21)

Sure. People love to forgive.

SPEAKER_1 (0:24)

I know Brian Bakker talked about this this morning on the 9 to Noon show. He met Tammy Faye and has a great Tammy Faye story.

But I just remember Jim Bakker. This was the rise of the televangelist, right? You had Jim Bakker up there crying. You had Jimmy Swaggart up there crying. And that kind of laid the groundwork for some of these, you know, Benny Hens and who's the current guy with the big mega church?

SPEAKER_2 (0:51)

Joel Osteen.

SPEAKER_1 (0:52)

Joel Osteen, right? I don't think Joel Osteen exists if it's not for the popularity, albeit there was a scandal involved of Jim Bakker. Jim Bakker might have been a crook, might have been kind of a sleazy guy, but he laid the groundwork for all of these televised religious services.

He was 86 And this brings us to Great Moments in Religion History.

SPEAKER_3 (1:17)

Oh, boy.

SPEAKER_1 (1:18)

Great Moments in Religion History. This was the pastor in Missouri who was very upset at his own congregation because they were cheap and didn't buy him the watch that he wanted for Christmas.

SPEAKER_3 (1:31)

See, that's how I know you still poor, broke, busted and disgusted because of how you've been honoring me.

I'm not worth your Gucci. You can buy a Movado watch in Sam's.

SPEAKER_4 (1:55)

Yes, you can.

SPEAKER_3 (1:56)

Yes, you can. And y'all know I asked for one last year. Here it is the whole way in August. I still ain't got it. Y'all ain't saying nothing. Let me kick down the door and talk to my cheap sons and daughters. She I don't want to hear no more excuse about what y'all can't afford. You can't afford it because you don't see the value here.

Y'all hear from y'all past and father. I'm over y'all. I'm over your cheap expressions.

SPEAKER_1 (2:20)

Let us pray.

SPEAKER_2 (2:23)

Love how you can buy a Movado watch in Sam's. And then the lady in the background. Yes, you can. Yes, you can.

SPEAKER_1 (2:31)

You still have a bonnet for me. Great moments in religion history.

SPEAKER_2 (2:37)

Let us pray.

SPEAKER_1 (2:39)

Who do you think is more passionate to their churchgoers? That Missouri pastor who just called them all cheap because they didn't buy him the watch that he wanted.

SPEAKER_2 (2:48)

Right.

SPEAKER_1 (2:49)

Or Reverend Brown from Coming to America.

SPEAKER_5 (2:53)

Only God can give that woman the kind of joys she had right there.

SPEAKER_4 (2:58)

Make a joyful noise unto the Lord.

SPEAKER_3 (3:03)

I am very happy to be here.

SPEAKER_1 (3:05)

Amen.

SPEAKER_5 (3:09)

I got a special treat.

SPEAKER_4 (3:10)

I want you to put your hands together and welcome him to the stage. Big round of applause for Jackson Heights own Mr. Randy Watson.

SPEAKER_3 (3:20)

Yes!

SPEAKER_4 (3:21)

Randy Watson!

SPEAKER_5 (3:23)

That boy is good.

SPEAKER_4 (3:25)

Good and terrible.

SPEAKER_1 (3:27)

Great moments in religion history.

SPEAKER_2 (3:29)

I'm going to Reverend Brown's church, for sure.

SPEAKER_1 (3:32)

It's The Hammer and Nigel Show.
