Sync Licensing: The Gateway To Passive Income For Audio Entrepreneurs - With Travis Terrell
6 Figure Creative
July 17, 2018
Passive income is the Holy Grail of income types, but it’s something that eludes most audio entrepreneurs. Most of us simply trade dollars for hours. One way to start building passive income is to venture into the world of sync licensing.

Welcome back to another episode of the 6 Figure Home Studio Podcast. I am your host, Brian Hood. I'm here with my co-host, Chris Graham. Chris, how you doing today, buddy?
Chris Graham (0:27)
I am doing all right. I'm doing okay.
Brian Hood (0:30)
Yeah, I heard that your secret project is making progress right now.
Chris Graham (0:34)
It's going well.
It's been an interesting week or two that's going really well. I'll talk about that more on a future episode.
Brian Hood (0:42)
Can you give us a hint as to what's coming? Is that a thing you can do?
Chris Graham (0:46)
It involves audio.
Brian Hood (0:49)
That's great. That's awesome. People are enthralled right now listening to this.
Chris Graham (0:53)
Yeah. I will say though, I'm kind of bummed because we were supposed to hang out like a week or two ago, and I was going to come down from NAMM. I packed all my bags.
Brian Hood (1:02)
You were like five minutes from leaving.
Chris Graham (1:04)
I was like two to three minutes from leaving, and my wife is like, hey, I need you to tighten the car seats in the other car.
So I went on the car and I'm like leaning over the back seat, tightening the car seats, thinking to myself, this is probably not going to be good for my back. And then my back was like, and I was like, oh shit, went inside and laid down and iced and did yoga all weekend instead of hanging out with you.
Brian Hood (1:31)
I was bummed, man, because we had plans to meet up people down here, which I did and you didn't. You missed out a lot of cool stuff.
Chris Graham (1:36)
It's stunk, man. I'm still not back to 100%. It's been like 10 days and I'm still like 95% maybe.
Brian Hood (1:42)
Dude, yeah. I forgot to ask you about that when I chatted with you earlier, but the biggest thing that I feel like I missed out on was Chris Graham imparting more wisdom on how to roast coffee, the Chris Graham way.
Chris Graham (1:52)
Yeah, I was gonna like, we're gonna do like the Yoda mentoring. If there is no try, I was gonna teach you all these things about roasting coffee.
Brian Hood (1:59)
Yeah, I was hopefully gonna impress you with a Brian Hood good cup. Brian Hood good cup of coffee? That's hard to say, but it also flows really well once you get it down the Brian Hood good cup. Gosh, that's a tongue twister. Anyways, let's stop talking about random shit that doesn't really matter. Other than your back going out, that did matter. That sucked, I'm sorry, buddy. So this episode is a special one because we're gonna be talking about a subject that is the holy grail of studio owners, the holy grail of really any audio entrepreneur, and that is passive income.
And we've talked about some forms of passive or semi-passive income in the past. We've even talked about this specific subject of sync licensing in the past, but we've not given it justice because to be honest, Chris and I know next to nothing about the world of sync licensing.
So, Chris, real quick, why should people be so excited about the potential opportunities within sync licensing?
Chris Graham (2:50)
Well, I think the most important thing to point out here is that there are two types of money. There's money that you receive for doing something, and there's money that you receive for having done something a long time ago, but it just keeps on showing up. The euphemistic term for that is mailbox money.
It is the holy grail of business owners. And one of the things that's so amazing about our industry is royalties, is that if you get your music in the right position, you know, so like if you're Mariah Carey, and all I want for Christmas, that's terrible. If you got that song, Mariah Carey gets paid every Christmas for that music being played, whether she does anything or not, she gets mailbox money for that.
Now, that opportunity is available for everyone that's a producer, that's an audio engineer, that's a composer, that's working with bands to get points. But rather than just explain how to get mailbox money, let's have our guest tell us a little bit how we can take our skills as musicians, as engineers, as producers, as composers, and convert that into mailbox money.
