That was Fox News and actress Sydney Sweeney. According, once again, controversy.
Have you followed this story at all? I want to talk about it. I'd love to hear from you too. You can join me in this. There's a new Sydney Sweeney controversy. This one tells you something fascinating about where our culture finds itself. She appeared in this provocative advertisement for Novig. They're a sports prediction platform. In it, like the jean commercial, it was before, it was a little bit different. She was barely clothed, right? She was strategically covered by sporting equipment, if you will. And the reaction from this ad, I'm sure Novig's loving it because all the controversy, they're getting their name out there, but the reaction from female athletes, man, it's been surprising. It's actually been fierce. There was an Olympic swimming champion who called the ad a kick in the face to women who've devoted their lives to sports. And I was struck by the whole controversy. I mean, she's, for decades, you're told that liberation means a woman controls her body, right? That her sexuality and her image, they're hers. And if she wants to reveal herself, monetize it, monetize her sexuality, use sex appeal to build a brand, that's empowerment.
Now you got some of the strongest criticism coming from women saying, don't reduce us to our bodies. So I think there's something profound going on here. And we could talk about this from a Catholic perspective. But yeah, I just zoom out and I look at where we are. There's a lot of confusion. The third wave feminist movement has always cried, it's my body, my choice. And of course, that's been primarily about abortion. But they've also now taken it to other areas of life. They've gone on and on about female empowerment and how something like prostitution is simply sex work. And I always make this comment, but I think a lot of the way they sanitize words is that though, prostitution is simply sex work. It's much more than that.
They put on those pink hats and they've been very vocal in politics, and they said little to nothing while the scourge of pornography grows, and women are objectified. And then it comes to Sweeney, right? And she's a beautiful woman.
She seductively advertises for American Eagle Jeans. It got a lot of attention, very much in the Brooke Shields. Remember Brooke Shields, what she did for Calvin Klein about those jeans? Nothing comes between me and my jeans. Well, Sydney Sweeney had an ad similar. The ad was that she's got good jeans, and jeans was spelled G-E-A-N-S, not G-E-N-E-S. And it got a lot of people riled up, and they were claiming that it was white supremacist, right? What? And Sweeney appeared in another advertisement. You know, this is targeting young men, and it was not in the least bit modest. And I'm going to be very delicate about how I talk about all this. I don't want to lead anybody to sin, but the feminists are going nuts over it. And they're upset that she seems to be stealing the spotlight from women athletes who worked hard to get to the top of their game.
To me, it's ironic, given that those same feminists are out there supporting men who claim to be women participating in female sports and they're smashing women's records. There's just mass confusion. There's a great disorientation. Maybe that's a better way of putting it. There's a disorientation going on in the culture right now. They also don't seem to have a problem with ESPN's annual body issue, which pretty much features unclosed women who strategically placed obstructions. But then there are conservatives who are all in support of Sweeney. They're saying, hey, she's causing the feminists to look like hypocrites. But there's nothing conservative about immodesty. And I think that's where we need to draw the line. Nothing conservative about indecency.
And gambling is another issue, too. I think it's a major problem in the country right now. It can be done if it's bridled, but that's a whole other conversation. Let's talk about it. Get your take on it. How do you feel about the whole Sweeney ad? What do you make? Why are feminists so upset about this? They want liberation and empowerment. What do you make of conservatives who are supporting Sweeney? What about the pornified culture that we live in? The objectification of women's bodies to sell something like that?
