Welcome to The Wrap. I'm Marley Kayden, here to take you through today's market action. Let's take a look at where the markets closed to end the day. All four major averages closed in the red as yields continued to climb higher. The S&P 500 was lower by more than 8 tenths of a percent. The Dow closed down 1.3%.
The NASDAQ was lower by about 3 quarters of a percent. And the Russell 2000 closed down one and a third percent lower. As we take a look at the leading and lagging sectors on the day, only two of the 11 S&P 500 sectors were higher. Energy was up a little more than a third of a percent, and real estate was up more than a tenth of a percent. To the downside, consumer staples and health care were both down just under 2 percent on the session, and consumer discretionary was lower by one and three quarters of a percent. As we look at some stocks on the move, Walmart shares plummeted 9 percent after earnings today, despite a beaten race quarter. The retail giant saw total comp sales rise 2.6 percent last quarter. That was below analysts' estimates. The company said it would use the tariff refunds it received to keep prices low for its customers. A winner to the upside was Deere after earnings topped estimates, which led to a just under 7 percent gain in shares. Deere saw worldwide net sales rise 5 percent and equipment sales of $11 billion topped the consensus estimate looking for 10.73 billion. Net sales in construction and forestry sales jumped 18 percent, with operating profits surging 84 percent. Deere also raised its fiscal 2026 net income forecast and expects equipment operations to generate 5 billion to 5.5 billion dollars in operating cash flow.
Crypto-related stocks were also on the rise today after President Trump said that Congress needs to pass the Clarity Act. The comments sent Bitcoin back above 70,000 for the first time since June and pushed crypto-related stocks higher, with Coinbase and Strategy closing up more than 7.5 percent. As we look at what to watch for on Friday, it's a light day for data and earnings. On the data front, we'll get the PMI composite flash. For earnings ahead of the opening bell, we'll get the report for BJ's Wholesale Club. That is going to do it for the wrap.
