Okay, our friends, so today, we are going to read a story about friendship. It is a story about friendship, and you may not think it is when I tell you what the title is, but there's stuff you need to know about how friendships work. Do you know that to get friends, you have to be a friend?
Did you know that? You have to do something before you can become friends with someone, and you have to be kind to them. Okay? So we're going to learn about that.
Philip (0:44)
And for example, a good example of friendship is me, Philip, and my neighbor Josiah. And well, how it began is he was jumping on his trampoline, and I asked him if he wanted to hop the fence and play in my backyard with me. We really did this. Yeah. And he said, yeah, he grabbed his phone, and he set an one-hour timer, and we played together for an hour.
And then I asked him if he could play tomorrow, and he said the day after.
Lisa Bueno (1:19)
So what you're telling me is...
Philip (1:20)
We kind of had a friendship at playing in my backyard. Yes. Not every other day, but whenever we could play, I went and knocked on his door, or he went and knocked on my door.
Lisa Bueno (1:30)
Yeah. So what you're telling me is that when you started your friendship with him, you went to him and asked him if he would be your friend.
I love that. That's so important.
So we're going to learn about this friendship. But before we do, I want to give our patron shout out, right? Our patron shout out today is for Elliot. And Elliot, he wanted the rock, paper, scissors story, but I had a hard time finding it. So I got as close as I possibly could. And today's story, Elliot, I hope you love. We love. It's super cute. It's called Stick and Stone by Beth Ferry and Tom Lexenheld. And it's read today by Mommy and...
Philip (2:16)
Like I said earlier, Philip.
Lisa Bueno (2:18)
Philip. So in the picture, we see Stick. And he's a very nice looking stick. He has a green leaf.
And we see Stone.
Philip (2:28)
And they both have tiny, frowny faces. They both have...
Lisa Bueno (2:31)
Yeah, neither Stick nor Stone look happy. Okay.
In fact, it says, Stick is lonely. And Stone is alone.
In fact, Stone thinks he's a zero. Like, cause he's kind of round shaped, like a zero. And Stick thinks he's one. Just one, not by himself. A one, because he's kind of shaped like a one, isn't he? Straight up and down. Alone is no fun. And in case you don't believe me, we can see a tater totter, right? Or a seesaw, with Stone on it. But he's alone on it.
Philip (3:19)
So I kind of have an idea that Stone could use, is where he's sitting on one side, and he rolls up to the other side, and he goes down, and then he rolls. Da da da da da.
Lisa Bueno (3:28)
He could do the tater totter by himself if he just decided to roll up and down on it. That's funny.
But they have finally figured out, kind of, how they can play near each other. So Stick gets on a swing, Stone gets on a swing, but Stone is round, right?
Philip (3:46)
And he's having a hard time swinging.
Lisa Bueno (3:48)
He's having a really hard time swinging. And along comes Pinecone, and makes fun, and makes fun of Stone. In the picture, Stone is falling. He fell out of the swing. And Pinecone points his finger at him and just laughs at him. He won't leave him alone.
And Stone did fall, and he does look pretty sad. Vanish, says Stick, pointing his finger at Pinecone, right? He's saying, get out of here. And his word does the trick, so Pinecone just huffs off.
Goodbye, Pinecone. And Stone whispers, gee, you stuck up for me. And Stick says, that's just what sticks do. Friends do it too.
So now Stick and Stone are no longer alone. And with each other as friends, they can do more stuff, right? We can see them now playing together. They're making bubbles, right? Stick and Stone, a friendship has grown. They're blowing bubbles all over the place. They wander through the fields, over the river, right? They explore. Ooh, there's a deep, dark cave in there. They're peering into it.
They laze by the shore and they have made a sandcastle. They're watching the dolphins jump in the ocean. They've even put some sunscreen on, so they're taking good care of themselves. Good job, guys. Then, thunder and rain. Boom! A loud hurricane. And both Stone and Stick are, ah! Dropping their jaws, looking upset. Stick is windblown. Wow! He flies off and he even loses his leaf.
