A study has found that women may be more attracted to flashy luxury items when they're ovulating.

Kip Wightman (0:11)

What? Hang on, can we get some newsflash music?

David Lutteral (0:16)

Do you want the...

Kip Wightman (0:19)

Yeah, in breaking news, Susie O'Neill.

Susie O'Neill (0:21)

Apparently, there's a time of the month when women are more likely to want to design a handbag.

And researchers reckon men might be the reason. Now, there's this really interesting study on ovulation.

Kip Wightman (0:31)

Yeah, no, I'm with you on that. I don't think there's a day when they don't like fancy handbags, from my experience, and nice stuff.

Susie O'Neill (0:38)

Yeah, true.

Kip Wightman (0:39)

Yeah, but I mean, if this is dangerous, if it gets even worse.

Susie O'Neill (0:43)

The point is, there's very few days in your cycle, cycle goes for 28 days, that you can actually fall pregnant.

David Lutteral (0:50)

Yeah, it's actually quite a slim window, isn't it?

Susie O'Neill (0:52)

It's a very slim window.

David Lutteral (0:53)

So when people do it, get like accidental ones, it's quite tough to do.

Susie O'Neill (0:58)

You're always so concerned about falling pregnant when you're young, accidentally. But then you actually look at the sort of...

David Lutteral (1:03)

The stats.

Susie O'Neill (1:04)

The stats, it's like six days, probably three days. It's probably only three days when you really...

David Lutteral (1:09)

And then people try for years to actually fall pregnant.

Susie O'Neill (1:12)

It's crazy. I've actually gone down...

This is a story on how, because you can fall pregnant when you're ovulating, which is the middle part of your cycle, so it's 28 days, so pretty much in the middle part, girls are really trying to woo men. And so that's why they reckon in this study that they're buying more luxury items to look nicer. You could have a bit of a peacock, flashing their nice feathers.

David Lutteral (1:35)

Naturally, the pheromones and the hormones...

Susie O'Neill (1:37)

Yeah, are looking nicer.

Kip Wightman (1:39)

Right. So this is historically, I guess, more... Over time and stuff.

Susie O'Neill (1:43)

The funny thing is, apparently...

Kip Wightman (1:44)

So you're trying harder in that third of the month.

Susie O'Neill (1:48)

Yeah, in the middle, pretty much in the middle.

David Lutteral (1:50)

How many days would that last? The trying hard phase.

Kip Wightman (1:53)

Ten days, I think.

Susie O'Neill (1:53)

Oh, God. Well, I don't know exactly how many days, but they said six days, you kind of...

David Lutteral (1:58)

You're good to go.

Susie O'Neill (1:59)

You're good to go. So probably, I'm going to say six days.

David Lutteral (2:01)

Okay.

Susie O'Neill (2:01)

But whilst... But the funny thing is, apparently, guys don't even know what's a luxury handbag or what's a fake handbag.

Kip Wightman (2:07)

I mean, either do I, to be honest. How would we?

Susie O'Neill (2:09)

Just buy the fake one. I've got a great Burberry fake handbag I bought a hundred years ago.

I bought it like 30 years ago in China. And every time I bring it out, everyone thinks it's the proper Burberry... Real one.

Susie O'Neill (2:21)

Burberry handbag.

Susie O'Neill (2:22)

But whilst doing this story, I went down a deep dive in cells and sperm and all that sort of stuff.

Kip Wightman (2:29)

It's so fascinating. Do you guys want to... Yeah, go for it.

Susie O'Neill (2:32)

Do you know that you're born, a female is born with all her eggs? Like you don't make any more eggs. Because you need a sperm and an egg to form an embryo.

David Lutteral (2:44)

So the female is born with, say, like 40 and eventually over her life, it just dwindles down.

Susie O'Neill (2:48)

Yeah, a female is actually born, a baby girl. When you're a baby, you're born with one to two million eggs.

Kip Wightman (2:53)

Wow.

Susie O'Neill (2:54)

All your eggs, you don't make any more. And then when you get to puberty, you've got about 300 to 500,000 eggs.

Okay, so you've lost a few.

Kip Wightman (3:02)

Yeah, right.

Susie O'Neill (3:03)

And then you only release in your fertile years, four to 500 eggs.

And the rest just dwindle away. Right. So I always thought that you just must make new eggs every month. But basically it's just the same old eggs that you're born with.

David Lutteral (3:17)

The stock never replenishes.

Susie O'Neill (3:19)

Never replenishes. And then when you talk about actually making an embryo or, you know, the fertile time, which is about three days really, it's because an egg, which is released when you ovulate, only lives for 12 to 24 hours. It only lives for one whole day.
