On September 14th, the New York Rangers snagged forward Malcolm Spence with the 43rd pick in the NHL draft, even though they didn't have a first-round selection this year. He played for the Erie Otters in the OHL and then joined the Michigan Wolverines last season. Scouts are saying he's got the kind of potential you'd expect from a much higher pick, possibly even a first-rounder. As a freshman in Michigan, Spence put up 25 points in 40 games, scoring 10 goals and dishing out 15 assists. He also showed he's not afraid to get physical, racking up 44 penalty minutes and had a solid plus minus rating of plus 18
He was a key part of the Michigan team that made it to the national semifinals. This upcoming season, his role at Michigan is expected to grow significantly. One scout mentioned he has grit and can skate and shoot well with good puck skills.
While he might not be the main guy driving a line, he's seen as a really strong complimentary player who can fit into a top six role. Spence played with some high caliber prospects in Michigan, including players now with the Colorado Avalanche and a first round pick from last year's draft. This experience playing alongside top talent and still finding ways to contribute is a valuable skill that should help him transition to the professional level. He's currently ranked as the fourth best prospect in the Ranger system.
With the way he's developing and the bigger role he's expected to take on in Michigan, he's on track to potentially live up to the second line upside. He's been projected to have. New York Rangers News Today, powered by AI bringing you what matters on and off the field. I'm Corey with the story.
