Spain defeating Argentina 1-0 yesterday in a dramatic extra time victory to win the World Cup. The final played at MetLife Stadium in the Meadowlands in New Jersey, just outside of New York City. The game remaining scoreless through regulation despite Spain taking 15 shots, while Argentina failed to record a single attempt on goal. Argentina losing one of its top players in the 93rd minute, the resulting red card leaving the team a man down for all of extra time. Argentina's goalkeeper, Emiliano Martinez, almost single-handedly keeping his team in the game, making a World Cup final record, 10 saves in regulation, playing with a broken finger no less.
Early in the second half of overtime, Spain finally breaking through. Left winger Nico Williams heading the ball backward from near the goal line, sending it into the box to forward Ferran Torres, who charged in and fired the game winner into the top of the net. Argentina not recording its first shot of the game until the 116th minute, then playing with intense urgency, launching attack after attack but never finding the net. The victory gives Spain its second Men's World Cup title ever, while ending 39-year-old Lionel Messi's bid to win consecutive championships. Spain also becoming the first country to hold the Men's and Women's World Cup titles at the same time.
