I can't say every time it comes around. It's my favorite month that year of sports, because if it's in a middle of the night time zone for the US, it really dampens it. Like I think my, and again, it's the World Cup. It shouldn't be centered around the US. It's something about me from my perspective.
I think I might have been at my peak building youth soccer fandom in 2002, when the World Cup was in South Korea. And I just remember being bummed. I remember being on, like I think I was in the Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri with my dad and at like two in the morning, went downstairs to the hotel lobby to try to watch one of the games. And conversely, I vividly remember almost everything about the 2014 World Cup, in part because that one was in Brazil. And so the games were basically aligned on American time zones. And so this one was just so awesome in every way imaginable. And it captivated obviously the world as it always does, but it captivated America in a way no World Cup has previously. And, you know, I spent a king's ransom going to these games. Tough spot for me, and we'll get to it later, but my life long philosophy of sporting event tickets are free. As long as you bet on the right team. I went to four games. Not only did my team go for 4, I didn't watch any of the teams I was rooting for score. I didn't even get to celebrate a goal. People calling it the curse of the bucket hat. I just, you know, get them next time, I guess. Fly over to Spain, Morocco, Portugal, quick stop in Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay's next World Cup is held in 6 different countries. See how that's going to work. But so they're going to do a ton of World Cup recap today. Also, I'm going to try to keep this show relatively quick because the reason Demonsi is not here is because Demonsi is on the second half of his paternity leave, and we got him and his family to spend at least part of that with us. And so I've got Demonsi here. I've got my whole, all my kids in the same house together in this house for the first time in almost two years. And for the first time ever, all my kids and my grandchild in this house, they're 15 feet away from me eating breakfast. And so I don't want to be here too long. However, there's a lot to get to with you guys. Also a little LeBron update along with, you know, full reaction, everything from the World Cup. But first, straight to voicemail. I think Dort did not have a great year last year. And you guys know my critiques of Dort as a player, as far as him going out of bounds on the tough play and flirting too much with dirty play. But he's still a useful player, particularly for a team like the Hawks, that is really trying to establish a true defensive identity. And I think they have done that now. And if Jalen Johnson takes another leap, if CJ can save the level he was at, they're a very interesting team. Meanwhile, the Mavs get, as part of the three-way trade, one of the, let's just call it what it is, least successful number one overall picks ever in Zachary Risasche. The Lakers signed Matisse Tybal to a league minimum. And Cam Scadaboo, listen, I'm not saying your starting running back has to be brilliant, but whatever decision-making level your starting running back needs to be at, I'm not sure Cam clears it. And I don't know if Jackson Dart is the guy to be like, listen, young man, let me show you how we do things as a pro. That concerns me as excited as people are about the New York Giants this year. However, I do want to do this quickly before we get to the World Cup. Right now, as we speak, there are a lot of people being laid off, it would appear, on and off the air in my field over at ESPN. And I don't know that I've ever really, I shouldn't say ever, I'm sure I have at some point. I don't really comment too much on layoffs. I've told my own personal story that 11 years ago, I was debating between a job at Fox and ESPN. Fox had been kind of recruiting me for a bit. ESPN came into the game late.
