Good Tuesday morning. Welcome to Squawk on the Street. I'm Carl Quintanilla with Courtney Reagan, Mike Santoli here at Post 9 of the New York Stock Exchange. David and Sara have the morning off today. We're just a few moments from the president's address before the UN General Assembly here in New York City. We will take you there live when it happens. That's Brazilian President Lula speaking in advance. Meantime markets pretty much close to the flat line, although tech is lagging today. Breath is fairly positive, about 3 to 1 VIX back above 16 Yield curve down just a bit, 10 year backing off of 414 Let's get to Eamon Javras this morning with more on what to expect from the president.
SPEAKER_5 (1:35)
Morning, Eamon.
Eamon Javers (1:36)
Good morning, Carl. A White House official tells me President Trump is going to use this speech in a couple of minutes to focus on the failures of globalism as he sees them and to deliver blunt and tough talk to the United Nations General Assembly.
The official says President Trump has effectively restored American strength on the world stage and says his historic speech at the United Nations General Assembly will highlight his success in delivering peace on a scale that no other president has accomplished while simultaneously speaking bluntly about how globalist ideologies risk destroying successful nations around the world. Now this is the president's first UN address of his second term and it comes after he shook up the global trading system with dramatic increases in American tariffs earlier this year and shocked many members of the NATO Alliance with his treatment of Ukrainian president Vladimir Zelensky earlier this year as well. Now the president is expected to meet with the Ukrainian leader while in New York today, so we'll see the evolution of that relationship play out. And he's expected to meet with Argentine president Javier Melli today along with Treasury Secretary Scott Besson. They're going to discuss a way forward for the financial markets of Argentina. Not clear if we're going to see a US financial intervention here. Secretary Besson told reporters yesterday that that's going to depend on market conditions as of this morning. Now President Trump also has a slew of other meetings today on the sidelines of the UN. General Assembly, including with Ukrainian president Vladimir Zelensky, as we said, UN. Secretary General Antonio Guterres and UN. Commission President Ursula von der Leyen are on that list of meetings today. We also expect to see multilateral meetings with Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Turkey, Pakistan, Egypt, UAE and Jordan. So it is going to be a packed schedule this morning. The White House also tells us there's going to be a reception this evening with more than 100 world leaders in New York. Back over to you guys.
Carl Quintanilla (3:27)
Ayman, as we're looking at pictures of President Lula, I'm curious to know what you make of some of the reporting about what he's saying to the General Assembly this morning, namely stressing the importance in one report's words of democratic values and national sovereignty, sort of a rebuttal to the U.S.'s attempts to interfere with the Brazilian judiciary.
Eamon Javers (3:48)
Yeah, I think the president is going to hear all that to some extent, but he's going to push forward with his message, which is one of anti-globalization, and that's what the tariff agenda of this year would suggest. It's sort of America first, and the White House always emphasizes that America first is not always America alone, but it's a much more individualistic, nationalistic approach to the global stage than we've seen from other American presidents. And I think, you know, there's some sense that this room has changed for this president. You know, you remember back in his first term, there was, you know, tittering and chuckling and laughing at President Trump while he was speaking to the UN General Assembly. I don't think there's going to be any of that today. I think this is an assembly that's going to take him very, very seriously, even as he's shaken up all these alliances globally, particularly the Transatlantic Alliance. And I think there's a lot of people in that Transatlantic Alliance who are hoping to keep the president sort of within the guardrails of that alliance, particularly on Ukraine and putting pressure on Russia to get a solution to the Russia-Ukraine war that is favorable to Ukraine and preserves Ukrainian democracy. So I think all that's at stake here, Carl, as we watch this. But we'll see what the president has to say today.
