It's September 10th. This is New York Rangers News Today, powered by AI, your team, your update. The New York Rangers snagged Albert Smits with the fifth overall pick in the recent NHL draft. He's a defenseman, and the team sees him as a potential cornerstone for the franchise. He was the second defenseman taken in the draft, going just after Daxson Rudolph. Smits was chosen over other highly touted defensemen, like Carson Carels and Chase Reid. The Rangers felt Smits was the most NHL ready among the defensemen available this year, which played a big part in their decision. Despite his readiness, there's a strong argument for him to start in the American Hockey League with the Hartford Wolf Pack. Scout suggests this would give him more ice time and opportunities to develop his game without the intense pressure of the NHL.

New coach Jay Leach, known for his work with younger players, is now leading the Wolf Pack, which should be a plus for Smits' development.

While he has the physical build for the NHL, honing his skills in the AHL is seen as a better long-term strategy. The Rangers have a solid group of defensemen already, so they don't need to rush Smits. He might see NHL action this season, but developing in Hartford first seems like the most sensible path for his career.
