There's only three things that the body needs to do in order to fall asleep. It's to lower its temperature, it needs to lower its heart rate, and it's to lower its anxiety. That's it. If I can get somebody to do those three things, I don't care who the fuck you are, I can probably get you to sleep.

Dave Asprey (0:12)

He's a clinical psychologist and sleep specialist, so we're gonna go deep on sleep.

I believe that 75 to 80% of all sleep disorders are fear-based. When you get woken up at three o'clock in the morning, you're not thinking in a positive way. Has anybody walked into three o'clock in the morning and said, happy birthday, you got a fucking raise? No, at three o'clock in the morning, it's negative. Getting up increases your heart rate, and most people actually don't have to pee. They turn to their doctor and say, I want a sleeping pill. And by the way, you know what all sleeping pills are, right? They're just anxiety pills. I'm gonna go to the thermostat, I'm gonna crank it to 68, everything's gonna be fine. Here's the problem, when you put it under the covers, you form a tent and now you have a sauna. So what I tell people to do is get a plastic water ball, two of them, freeze them. There's a fairly recent study talking about increasing dose of creatine in order to overcome sleep deprivation. It does totally work. Here's the problem, it's dangerous. When you have people who say, I'm just gonna sleep five hours and then I'm just gonna load up on creatine every day, that becomes problematic. Sleep is a lot like love, the less you look for it, the more it shows up. When you have this anticipatory desire to sleep, you ain't gonna sleep, brother.

You're listening to The Human Upgrade with Dave Asprey.

How many nights have you stared at the ceiling, counting the hours until morning? Maybe you tried a sleep supplement, but it knocked you out and left you groggy, like you traded one problem for another. Poor sleep doesn't just make you tired. It kills your performance, slows your brain down, and speeds up aging. Killswitch from Switch Supplements solves that problem. It works with your biology instead of against it. It contains five gut-friendly, extensively researched ingredients like GABA, magnesium glycinate, and tart cherry extract to help you fall asleep naturally, stay asleep, and wake up clear. It's in the form of a delicious, sugar-free, no BS hot cocoa drink. Sleep tracking data proves how well it works. People consistently hit 90 plus sleep scores and more than double their REM sleep in only three days with Killswitch. If you're ready for the best sleep of your life, order now at switchsupplements.com and use code DAVE for 20% off. If you don't sleep better, you get your money back. Killswitch works with your biology. Your body does the rest.

Why won't your stress budge no matter what you do? You're doing the work, the cold plunge, the breath work, the supplements, and your nervous system is still running hot. Here's the problem. Every recovery tool you use only works when your body believes the threat is over. If your nervous system never gets that signal, it stays in survival mode regardless of what you stack on top of it. The direct line to that signal runs through your vagus nerve. When you stimulate it, your parasympathetic nervous system activates. Your body shifts out of fight or flight and into the state where real recovery happens. ZenBud is the tool I reach for to make that shift happen. It sits on your ears like a headset and uses focused ultrasound to reach your vagus nerve directly. Just five minutes daily is all you need.

In clinical studies, participants experienced significant improvements across stress, mood, and sleep after just four weeks of use.

Many people notice it in their first session. Check it out at zenbud.health and use code DAVE15 at checkout for a discount. Your biohacks are only as good as your nervous system's ability to recover. This is the missing piece.

This episode is recorded at Jim Quick's Limitless Conference here, which is a fantastic conference on brain and human performance in general. Jim Quick's been on the show many times, dear friend. And I'm endorsed his most recent book Limitless Daily. So thanks, Jim, for hosting us.

Michael Breus (3:58)

Yeah.

Dave Asprey (3:59)

Our guest today is Dr. Michael Breus, who's been on the show, what, I think a couple of times so far? Yeah. And he's a clinical psychologist and a sleep specialist. So we're gonna go deep on sleep.
