Welcome back to another episode of the 6 Figure Home Studio Podcast. I am Brian Hood and I'm here with my co-host, Christopher Graham. How are you doing today, dude?
Christopher Graham (0:26)
I'm fantastic. How are you?
Why was that awkward?

Because no one gives a shit how we're doing.

We get right to the point.

Okay, so today's topic is, should I quit my day job to start recording full-time? That's probably not going to be the podcast title of the episode, or maybe it will, I don't know. We choose that shit later. But the question is still valid. Should you, not me, because I've already done that, should you as the listener quit your day job to start recording full-time? And this episode is going to explore that topic. We have some things to address that I think are going to be very important to a lot of you if you are considering that. And I think for those of you who have loosely considered it but have been terrified and haven't done it yet, but you should be doing it, I think we have a lot of stuff for you as well. And for those of you who are about to quit your day job, but you obviously should not, but you just haven't seen that yet, we're going to also preach some truth to you and hopefully stop you from making a mistake.
And that's our plan today.
So let's start things off real quick. Let's address some lies first. Chris, do you want to start this little segment out?
Christopher Graham (1:32)
Yeah, so this is immediately, you know, I think one of the most important things that you need to consider when you're thinking about quitting your day job, and whether you're going to start a mixing business or mastering business or recording studio, whatever, all of this stuff applies. And the most important thing to keep in mind is this idea of validation, this need that we have to be respected, to be thought cool by other people, and how sticky that gets when you're thinking about starting a business because you want people to think you're cool.
Brian Hood (2:03)
I've seen that, not just in a recording, but in just general entrepreneurship.
Christopher Graham (2:08)
Well, the validation thing, it's sticky. It's sticky because if what you really want is for people to think that you're cool and you think that running a recording studio is the way to do that, yeesh, that's dangerous because you will make decisions so that people will think you're cooler as opposed to making decisions that will make your business run better.
Brian Hood (2:30)
And if you've listened to the podcast for any amount of time, you've heard us talk about this before, but in reality, if that is the reason you're doing this, then this question does not really apply to you because you probably shouldn't be doing this in the first place.
Christopher Graham (2:41)
Yeah, you should do some soul searching.
Brian Hood (2:43)
Yeah, do some soul searching. If your main driving factor is just getting validation from people to look cool, you're not going to carry through the tough times that are inevitably ahead of you when you do quit your day job.
So, I don't think that many people listening to this podcast are that type of person. I don't think that type of person really listens to this type of podcast, honestly. I think, you know, they're more drawn towards whatever makes them look sexy, and this podcast clearly is not going to do that, but it's worth mentioning, I think.
Christopher Graham (3:10)
Yeah, I think it's something that we don't want to ruin anyone's lives by, you know, getting them so amped up about having a successful business that they quit their day job when they weren't ready to do that yet. And I think a good way to figure out, do I just want to do this because I think it's cool, or do I want to do this because it's in my blood, a good way to figure that out is to ask yourself, would you still do it if literally everyone that you know thought you were stupid for doing this?
Brian Hood (3:37)
Well, that's easy because everyone does think I'm stupid for doing this.
