All right, on today's Something Major, we are recapping round of 16s at the US Open. Let's go.
SPEAKER_2 (0:06)
Jack, John, Stevie and Sam, got close a few times, never won a slam, Nothing Major.
Sam Querrey (0:12)
All right, welcome back, everyone. We got John Isner back home in Dallas, Steve Johnson still filming from his gigantic suite, and myself. We got the suits at SIFT. We're gonna break down round of 16 I'm haggard right now. I just came from the Learner Tien match.
Brutal. I've already popped an Ambien. I really need a good night's sleep.
John Isner (0:35)
You've already taken an Ambien?
Sam Querrey (0:37)
Yeah, I got up this morning and just hit on the court on Ash at 7 It's now 10.36.
I got stuck in the Tien match and then I couldn't do my suite visits. So I was just real angry and my eyes twitching.
Steve Johnson (0:51)
Esky is finally crispy, John.
I'm finally crispy. It doesn't have to be too often. 14 days here.
John Isner (0:58)
What's wrong with your eyes?
Sam Querrey (0:59)
I don't know.
Steve Johnson (1:00)
My eye hurts.
Sam Querrey (1:00)
I feel like I didn't sleep well. My eye hurts now. Are you getting sick? No, I'm not getting sick. I don't get sick. It's just like a purely an eye problem.
John Isner (1:08)
I think you're getting sick.
Sam Querrey (1:09)
No, I don't get sick. I don't get sick.
Steve Johnson (1:11)
He's crispy though. He's crispy.
SPEAKER_2 (1:12)
He's definitely crispy.
Steve Johnson (1:14)
I offered him an Acai bowl earlier. He didn't even take it. That's how you know he's crispy.
SPEAKER_5 (1:18)
I already had one.
Steve Johnson (1:20)
Not like you to have a second one.
Sam Querrey (1:22)
I'm eating clean here, as you know.
John Isner (1:24)
Yeah. How's your ad doctor?
Sam Querrey (1:27)
I think it's OK. I haven't pushed it enough to really know.
Friday's the real test. Stevie and I, Stevie's doing, dude, we got a pro, and there's some decent guys.
Steve Johnson (1:40)
Oh, yeah, you're going to be bad at that, dude. I don't like your chances.
Sam Querrey (1:42)
I've already asked to hit with the worst people.
Steve Johnson (1:45)
All right, smart.
Sam Querrey (1:46)
All right, let's go. Before we start, some real celebrities have finally showed up, by the way, Matthew McConaughey in the crowd. We've had some NBA players, so that's been good. But let's talk tennis. Carlos Alcaraz takes down Tommy Paul, 6'4, 6'3, 6'4.
Stevie, I've been saying it the whole time, Carlos is back. He hasn't missed a beat, but now everyone is saying it, right? He's back.
Steve Johnson (2:11)
He looks flawless.
Sam Querrey (2:12)
Tommy played well.
Steve Johnson (2:12)
Yeah, he's back. He pulls out. Just another classic.
I go with the tie right now. Another classic. Just Carlos. Just he's back. He's back. There was question marks prior to the event because I mean, we were all getting the news and the info of, you know, the week before, he's losing practice sets. He looks bad, yada, yada, yada. I don't know why you're undressing. You could have done that a while ago. But here we go, Carlos is back when he played insane and he smothered Tommy from first ball. It was, it's crazy how these guys can just go out for four and a half months, whatever it was.
Sam Querrey (2:46)
These guys, it's only one guy.
John Isner (2:47)
Who's doing these guys?
Steve Johnson (2:49)
I'm saying Roger back in the day, he'd take time off, Rafa would take time off, Novak was out for a little bit and they just come back and they don't skip a beat. Like they're so good that they don't need reps. It's insane. I mean, it was like six weeks ago that we saw those pictures of Carlos or videos of Carlos like with that like, you know, like broken half racket doing like half swings and like his court in Spain somewhere. And now he's just 100% ready to go. He looks unbeatable. And it's a bummer for Tommy because he was playing great, but he had no shot on this one. Carlos was a joke, hitting balls so hard. And when he's in rhythm like that, you got nothing going on. It's over.
Sam Querrey (3:24)
He had a forehand angle in the first set, 103 miles an hour. Most guys would hit a forehand angle 60, 70 miles an hour, 103 miles an hour. You just had to sit there and watch. John, bummer for Tommy because there's a lot of spots in the draw where a lot of guys, Tommy would have beaten around a 16
